DARREN Ward and Tommy Miller will remain in charge of Swindon Town for the visit of Bury, as the search for a new full-time manager has yet to begin in earnest.

The Advertiser understands the new owners of the club, a consortium led by Jed McCrory, have yet to make any formal approaches to prospective targets regarding the vacant position at the County Ground following Paolo Di Canio’s resignation last week - and they are unlikely to do so until after the clash with the Shakers tomorrow.

A national newspaper reported on Sunday that Nigel Adkins had turned down the position in Wiltshire, but the Adver has learnt that – even if he had been formally offered the role by Town – the former Southampton manager would not contractually be able to accept.

It is believed that Adkins is still officially on “gardening leave” from St Mary’s and will remain so until the terms of his severance package from the Premier League club are finalised. Adkins’ first-team coach, Dean Wilkins, is understood to be in the same situation.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, Phil Brown, Terry Butcher, Peter Taylor, Gus MacPherson and Andy Thorn are all interested in taking over from Di Canio, but in the interim Ward and Miller will continue to prepare the team.

Miller revealed after the 1-1 draw with Preston on Saturday that the caretaker duo want to recruit new faces to bolster Swindon’s depleted ranks.

“We can go to the new owners and maybe give them a list but we don’t know the authority we have at this minute at time,” he said. “We would like one or two in just to boost us but that’s not my final decision.”

Meanwhile, the new board of directors will be formally introduced to the media at 2pm this afternoon at a press conference at the County Ground. Chairman Jed McCrory, commercial manager Gary Hooper, general manager Steve Murrall and Callum Rice are the men in charge of Town.

Chief executive Nick Watkins was retained by the new owners upon their successful takeover of the Robins on Thursday but it remains unclear how long he will stay with the club.

It is expected that the board will be quizzed on their plans for the club in the immediate future, the search for a new manager, the redevelopment of the County Ground and their respective backgrounds.
