SWINDON TOWN: Rooney returns to first-team training

Luke Rooney Luke Rooney

SWINDON Town have confirmed that Luke Rooney has returned to first-team training ahead of the visit of Preston this weekend.

Rooney has trained away from the squad for several months after falling out of favour with former manager Paolo Di Canio.

The former Gillingham winger, who cost Town around £125,000 in January last year, has not featured for the Robins since the trip to Preston in September but he looks set to be included in the matchday squad this weekend.

A club statement read: "Luke Rooney returned to first team training on Thursday morning as preparations continued for the visit of Preston North End this weekend."

I'm afraid PDC fell out with far too many players while he was here - this caused us costs which we couldn't afford and helped get us where we are. Any manager in any business will tell you you have to sweat your assets to make money, not have them training with the youth team!

Caddis return would be fantastic, cant happen though until end of season as he is on a season long loan at Birm. Have to say this was a massive mistake by PDC to let him go in the first place. As for Rooney good to see him back in the reckoning, he does offer something different and has the ability to make an impact coming off the bench. Really looking forward to tomorrows game, wont be the same without PDC but to me STFC IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN ANY ONE INDIVIDUAL.... come on you redsssss !!

When I first saw Luke Rooney against us at the County Ground I thought then trhat he was a quality player.

Just needs some regular playing time in the first team and I am sure he will improve to the current first squad standard.

As to Paul Caddis, I would also like him to return and used to love the Caddis, Ferry, Ritchie tri-angle on the right wing. Hopefully Nathan or Luke can fill the missing space!

However, when I read the article in the Birmingham Post yesterday PC does not sound keen to come back and was talking about being released not returning.

Rooney may not be the best defensively but can always cause problems offensively. Always thought he was a complete waste of talent and bearng in mind our lack of wingers at this present moment in time this had to be a no brainer for me.

Just saying lets support the players. A new start for Rooney he could become the player we all thought he would and maybe give us something different.

His confidence was shot under Paolo for whatever reason so the last thing he needs is fans getting on his back before he has even got on the pitch, assuming he does.

I agree Pack to us and Rooney to Chelt would have been a good deal, but we are where we are, so I for one hope his does the business on the pitch and sets up a few goals for Williams or is that another player you don't rate?

I'm not sure Paolo was ever happy with any winger other than Ritchie.

Tried Atiku, Esajas, Gabilondo, De Vita, Holmes, Roberts, Storey, Williams, Adam Rooney, Bostock and Luke Rooney.

Was always Ritchie plus one. Roberts with the PDC shackles off will hopefully now shine, and RDV hopefully too. Luke Rooney now has his chance, but clearly is a confidence player. Was no good for him having PDC in his ear at the slightest error, sending the subs out to warm up if he didn't do something right.

On his day Luke looks quality, but my concern is whether he is a bit like Benson in that L2 is his limit. Not the strongest or the quickest, but a very good delivery and a decent shot so if he can get into forward positions he will create a bit. Good luck to him.

Did you all hear that Paolo took all of the pictures of his success down last night when he went in to his old office, why would he do that if its not an up yours to the club, well we are the club, he has made loads of mistakes and after reading the Black interview he obviously wanted his own way all the time. He is a great figure head for the fans, delivered the title and restored passion, but at three times the budget that Luggy did it with and letting players like Caddis go because its his way or the highway will cause him problems in his next job.

I will always love PDC for his desire passion and committment, but there is a sour note about all of the end, I went to Crawley away and said then he was off, Goodbye Paolo.....

Now moving on, welcome back Luke, has got real talent but doesn't always use it....

To be fair, I don't always agree with Smirg Kcab but he has a point here - Rooney has to be one of the most inconsistent players I've seen in a town shirt, he can do dazzling things or be completely anonymous, and at his worst he's a bit of a liability, and has shown a poor attitude on the pitch at times as well. A player I've desperately wanted to see do well, but has found it hard going.

Glad he's getting another change (especially with Ritchie gone, we need as many wide options as we can) but he also needs to learn to work for the ball and stay focused rather than throwing a strop when he hasn't had the ball in a while. I wouldn't pick him over Roberts at the moment (especially after Tuesday) but he could be a very good impact sub and play an important role if he gets his attitude right. Hopefully the dynamic duo can get more out of him than Paolo could.

The sun didn't shine out of Paolo's backside, he had players at the cub to work with that any manager if league one would give an arm and a leg for. As for the league two title if we hadnt of won it we would have made record for spending more money that a chapionshio club and still be a league two club now.

I think Paolo did a good job but nothing more than any decent manager would have done with the same budget. Paolos gone now and won't be back...we move on...hopefully upwards!!

Great to have him back and i can't believe that some on here are criticising Ward and Millers first managerial decision as we should be supporting them as they need us. As for Rooney being no good, when we first signed him he played really well for us and got quite a few assist then Holmes came in and Rooney was cast a side by PDC then recalled for the odd occasion in league one but didn't do so well but you must consider the lack of games he had up to this point. How can people say Pack will be better as he has only played league two football. If we can get Caddis back then we would have a very strong squad for this final push.

Yep, may as well or trade him in for someone we will play - basically don't see the point in having a player on the books if he's doing nowt. Not good for the player or the club. Whilst he's here he should be on the bench at least as an option. He'll be gagging for competetitive football by now so hopfeully will take the chance if/when it comes.

Maybe we should consider the size of the squad at the moment rather than debate his merits or lack of.

We have not been able to name the full quota of subs in the last 4-5 games so to me it makes sense that we get him back on board.

Until we get a new manager we are not likely to see loanees come in. Every available player is therefore a bonus at the moment regardless of how much or little they are able to contribute.

Have a feeling Miller might put himself on the bench tomorrow. I never did get it right with Paolo's selection, always a surprise or two. But think if everyone available is fit, we could line up with something close to who's available for selection, personally i would prefer Nat Thompson starting at RB, but think macca will be reinstated as the skipper and unless wardy rest himself, i can only see either Jay or nat being left out to make room for his inclusion.

Possible line up :
Fodds,
Macca (capt)
Flint,
Ward
McEverley
Roberts,
Ferry
Navarro
De Vita
Williams
Collins

bench :

Bedwell,
Thompson N
Miller
Rooney A
Rooney L
ANother 1 (Possibly Thompson L)
ANother 2 (Possibly Oakley)

Such a small squad to pick from with 3 on the bench with less than 10 first team between them, Any red cards or any more injuries to key players will just about kill off our promotion challange.

Hope to see him on the pitch during the 90 mins tomorrow and I personally will welcome him back with open arms as I think this guy was dealt a raw deal since he joined us.

Bring on tomorrow & welcome back Luke Rooney!!
Good player, but never quite fitted into PDC's regime of working hard and tracking back.

Still think he is worth another go.

A lot of thoughts about Di Canio.I think he did a great job.Yes he spent what he was given but if you've been set an objective by the old board to get promotion to the Championship no matter what it costs then you are going to do exactly that.i.e why did they sign Di Canio in the first place if they didn't want him they didn't have to sign him. They offered him a contract and like anyone else would, you would accept it if they are going to pay you big wages to do a job.If they offered him a contract of say 100k per year and said to him at the start , your target is to achieve Championship football but you can't buy anyone to achieve that, then he wouldn't have signed for Swindon would he?Its not rocket science.Black was against Di Canio,Wray loved Di Canio and backed him in everything he requested. So then Black had enough of injecting cash into the club and didn't want to do it anymore so he got rid of the man who was in favour of Di Canio ie Wray which then meant he could make Di Canio promises he couldn't keep. Then that annoys Di Canio knowing exactly how he reacts therefore let's promise to offer him a new contract without really meaning it.Ie the takeover should be done by Monday.Knowing if it didn't go through then Di Canio and his team walk.Which means the save a fortune on paying Di Canio and his team any compensation.Blacks done his job! New board take over the a clean slate ie a massive reduction paying big wages on Di Canio and his team.Operation successful!Ie making Di Canio walk and starting again. What will happen next is we will make the play-offs because you get more revenue from that.Players leave in the summer as contracts run out. That reduces the wages bill again. If we get promoted new board are happy because they've made their money and then they get another 4 million from TV rights and then they sell the club.I think they are only in it for a short term gain but I hope I'm proved wrong!

P Cowley, Hmmm an Oxford name perhaps.

Clean sheet at the top, but still the same players so get behind them with your support and we might even knock Yeovil off their perch. Time they lost anyway 8 wins is too many!!!!
May the Town end beat the North End and keep a clean sheet Fodders!
