SWINDON TOWN: Miller and Ward to take temporary charge of Robins

Tommy Miller Tommy Miller

TOMMY Miller and Darren Ward will take charge of first-team affairs at the County Ground for the weekend visit of Preston, Swindon Town have confirmed.

Following the resignation of Paolo Di Canio and his backroom staff this week, the senior pros in the Town ranks have been asked to assume control while a new manager is sought.

A statement released by the Robins this evening said Miller and Ward will be placed "in temporary charge" of the club.

It read: "Swindon Town Football Club have today placed Tommy Miller and Darren Ward in temporary charge of first team affairs.

"The pair, who have the full support of the first team squad, have been consistent performers for Town this season and have the combined experience of around 1,000 professional games.

"Miller joined the club in the summer of 2012 from Huddersfield Town whilst Ward signed a permanent deal in the January 2013 transfer window from Championship side Millwall.

"A goalkeeping coach and fitness coach will be brought in to assist the duo on a temporary basis.

"This initiative has the full support of the prospective new owners, allowing them the opportunity to assess all of the applications that have been received in relation to the vacant managerial position and take a considered view for the long-term benefit of the Club.

"The Robins are at home to Preston North End this Saturday at The County Ground. Play your part this weekend and get behind the team at The County Ground. To purchase match tickets please call the STFC Box Office on 0871 876 1993."

Ward took to Twitter on Wednesday evening to pledge his commitment to the role.

He wrote: "Thanks for the great support and both Tommy and I will give our all to keep moving the club forwards."

A decision is made, and in the circumstances a good one.

I said last night ward will step up as a senior pro and am delighted that he and miller will run the show up to the weekend and probably beyond for a bit.

I have a sneeky feeling the players will produce this much mentioned "seige" mentality.

Hopefully only a two game measure and presumably will be assisted by Bodin and Pitman too if needed. Seems silly to waste any managerial experience (however slim) we have at the moment.

My preference when new owners get in would be:
1st - Paolo (however unlikely, surely worth a try)
2nd - Adkins (however unlikely, surely worth a try)
3rd - Alan Curbishley
4th - Nick Barmby
5th - Owen Coyle
..
..
..
..
..
..
12167th Newell
12168th Hockaday
12169th Buckle

If none of the first few possible then would prefer a younger manager/former player as a lot of the names mentioned on here recently just feel uninspiring due to their other failures.

I think the board will prefer your 12167,12168 and 12169th choice.they haven't given me much faith.Especially when Watkins came in and got the club back on the map and was honest to people.Getting the faith back and since then it's all gone up the wall.good luck to these guys but I'm not sure how much they know about Preston and the way the play

In a roundabout way I guess this actually confirms that all the back room staff did actually resign - have not seen it reported anywhere. Pleased with Ward / Miller they have lots of experience and hopefully will be able to 'tweak' the PDC style to suit the team. Would not be adverse to seeing them in the 'management' position until the end of the season - we must bear in mind however, the difficulty of managing and playing

This is a sensible move. What we need is continuity in methods and the overall fitness regime etc. Bodin isn't anywhere near the first team training and set-up as far as I can see, whereas Ward and Miller obviously are.

BREAKING NEWS....I am in the know. The reason behind the FL delay in approving the takeover is due to a failure in the 'POT TO **** IN TEST'. Bodin has stepped in previously but when it came to getting the job on a permanent basis, he has alway lost out. Perhaps he doesn't want to go through the same again.

Regarding the takeover delay and this loan fee, the fact that its taken at least an extra couple of days to sort makes me think it is one of the following:
-We are disputing with the club whether we should pay it (perhaps the Giles Coke situation where PDC said he had been injured and not treated correctly before he came) or
-There is a dispute between new board and Andrew Black over who should pay it

Either way it could drag on a little while if it is one of those.

Regarding the appointment of the 2 old players to take charge for next to games, is quite simply the most obvious choice given that the way we have played and trained will not be broken. You have to admire the way Ward conducts himself, with diet training etc, must be the same for Miller. Don't want someone coming and saying they are too fit and need days off from training.

Roll on the next 2 home games.

People must realise now much financial s%%t this club is in even the fact the take over has been delayed is due to unpaid bills

Players will be sold in the summer its not going to be pretty for the rest of the season but this is what makes people stronger

I can't see another team overtaking town this year whatever the outcome we can't lose any players till the summer anyway

What will be will be in the close season
But we only have two options go bust or be in the championship

Agreed we won't have a figure head like Di Canio but don't forget we would have all been Danny Wilsons red and white army if we had won that play off game at wembley

Sometimes I think the bookies are just being crafty and chucking a name in at a fairly low (but not too low) price in the hope that punters will think "ah, somebody knows something, I'll have some of that". And even 7/4 favourite means they think it's more likely to be someone else than him!

Sounds like good news then on the takeover as Jed is out on the lash, unless he's celebrating Hockaday ruling himself out.

Dear

I've been having a really up and down week, the managers gone, the staff gone, money gone, us fans still here - and WE ARE TOP OF THE LEAGUE!!!!

Therefore, to keep our rudderless ship continuing steaming ahead, please can we have:

1. Three points saturday
2. The takover completed (would put that top but think more chance of saturday coming first, maybe 2nd, 3rd....
3. A permanent manager in as soon as possible - someone that can continue steering ahead, such as
R De matteo (blind optimism but thats all I have at the mo!)
N Adkins (am I still being blind??)
A Curbishley (found me glasses)
O Coyle (got them on)

Most of the others mentioned, Buckle, Newell, Hockaday (sorry fella!), Brown - please nooooooo (I may as well be blind)

Thank you.
PS - If you could find the money to sort our stadium situation too I promise I will hand deliver a lovely piece of cheese.

Brilliant move by the club! I love it! I just hope the Ward/Miller combo works, and then maybe could become permanent if it does. Even on a carrot juice diet, 34 is a bit old for a player to think about many more seasons running around in the mud ...... Much better to be in the dugout out of the rain, or à la PDC, in the stands.

So far as the betting odds are concerned, they reflect the amount of money being bet, not the real probabilities of who will be the new manager(s). Betfair (who?)don't have any more idea than us.

I'm so glad things are starting to get sorted, and that we're now all looking forward to Saturday again instead of nervously waiting for the next bit of bad news.

Yes, count me in please, for sure.

Colin Calderwood is totally inspirational without being over the top and the players would respect him, without any doubt.

A natural leader as a player for Swindon Town, with something still to prove as a Manager, but as honest as the day is long, I think he would be a breath of fresh air for the younger players and respected by the older ones.

We could do much worse than Colin Calderwood and most fans will remember him in very positive terms, perhaps just what we need in the current crisis.

So who's available to come in as the goal keeper coach and fitness coach, one of those rugby boys will do for fitness.

We could do with some extra backup for Wes, no disrespect to Bedwell, but a seasoned goalie to register as a player would be a good shout, where's London Red, he'll know who might be available.

In the meanwhile I'll keep dreaming of clean sheets and actually just mke Ward and Miller managers until the end of the season. If they have the backing of the players that's good enough for me.

Get on with it and win this league, with or without a statue. Ps I'd wrongly assumed that for the first time in 37 years if supporting we weren't run by clowns or idiots!

At least they will feel that they will be able to make a mistake without being dragged off. Is that why Roberts has perked up? The man went on and on about loyalty, principles and mental strength. He failed on all three on Monday. Cried off when the going got tough. His only loyalty is with west ham and Lazio and even then, when he manages one of them, someone on the board will upset him and he'll sulk off like he did with us, Celtic, AC Milan etc, etc. Let's rebuild and hopefully get someone in with a bit of backbone and fight in him this time. Just a thought :-)

I have some BREAKING NEWS on the catering front. On Saturday Burgers (Crocodile or Horse) are replaced with Cous Cous and only Yam Chips will be available.

However, there will be a new Salad Bap available. The Baps are being baked by Mick Murphy at the Baker's shop using organic flour ground by Windy Miller using grain from Johnathan Bell's farm. Captain Snort will deliver the Baps in his army truck and a police escort will be provided by PC McGarry (No. 452). Mrs Honeyman has assumed control of all catering and Dr Mopp has agreed to act as physio.

The statement earlier seemed to make a coach important, if Town are so determined to burn money, I might offer my services. I used to play in goal for Wroughton in my distant youth!!
I agree Joey, did Gordon Banks have a coach or Peter Shilton?it'll get to a stage where every player in the team as a personal coach!Lol!!!

Well I for one, certainly wish PDC and his Team all the best for the future and would like to thank them for their efforts.

There is however, one further bill outstanding, in that a large chunk is missing out of PDC's office door.

As it cannot be established if this damage was caused when it caught PDC's arse on the way out, or if he kicked it previously, the takeover cannot proceed until this is resolved!

all clubs have a goalkeeping coach Jim Barron was at Villa and I think still is. Totally different type of training to outfield players to stay sharp etc. Isn't Ray Clemance the England goalie coach?

To save some of you staying up all night, if you google 'English Football Captains' and check on Wiki' the possible list is endless, even allowing for the ones that are long since RIP.

Is it Bryan Robson sitting next to Jed in the cap in that often used photo?

Or is it Guv?

Keegan / Wilkins / Adams if not Robson.

How can people be so positive about this? It's an awful step .... Losing a manager and full back room team and getting 2 players to make do ....

Let's hope the new owners get sorted soon and get a new manager in or paolo back before the wheels come off ....

I hope we win Saturday but am nervous already now!

Most people on here are still positive because;

We won Tuesday night, despite everything else that is going on.

We are top of the league!!!!

If and only IF, the takeover goes ahead, we can still get automatic promotion, for the second year running.

The alternative is meltdown, points deducted and a desperate future, which most on here would not want in their darkest dreams, even if it might suit your negativity!!

Its been a crap few days off the pitch, but I thought this was the best news to come out of the CG in a while.
Two very experienced professionals, both committed to their own game and the club. Fodder's Tweet suggests they (and this decision) are well respected by the squad and that it's already creating a unity that might have been undermined by panic hiring a new manager - new tactics, new training methods, a new approach would most likely have disrupted the squad and the season.
I think this is a great option - cement the group, a team only fighting for each other and the fans, the opportunity to prove what they can do as individuals?
All very positive in my book!

Are you serious joey???

I've been following town through thick and thin for over 20 years!

I stand and sing for the team week in week out. I support them, I hope them do well and don't let up in any of the games, I never give up so please wind your neck in.

Yes I think it's a poor choice, I like those players, I hope they succeed but no I don't think it's a good choice, I want a manager. Just because I have that opinion doesn't make me negative on all things Swindon. Me thinks this stress has affected your thinking ....

Nice post Louis and Matt, fair comments and good thoughts.

I thoroughly hope you're right and it galvanises the squad to do it again on Saturday. I was chuffed with the Tranmere result, I hope training has gone as well since ...

Let's hope they keep it ticking over until someone comes in for the longer term ... Adkins maybe

Yeah, for me this is a good opportunity for the squad to use its collective strength, experience and drive to really push on and prove that they have what it takes as a professional, bonded unit - regardless of what happens off the pitch.

I think the experience will also cement the group for next season. Winning the next 2 home games and pushing on for promotion demonstrates how together they really are.

If they do get promoted this will serve them very well. Teams that stay up tend to have been together as a unit for some time.

Here's hoping anyway!

Adkins finally appeared on the betting odds leaderboard - 12/1 with Skybet. But that's the same price as Bodin, so doesn't mean much.

Is anyone actually betting on this market? Seems like we get a new favourite and big change in odds as soon as some old granny puts a pound on each way. Jimmy Floyd still favourite at 7/4.
You're not far wrong.

As I understand, there's negligible money on most of these jobs, especially one like the ton. A couple of people whacking £10 or £20 on someone see the odds crash as the bookies get worried that someone's got inside info. They probably only run the book on these to get freebie publicity when their odds get reported or the Skybet bod gets to go on SSN.

Surely the ex England captain is Terry Butcher? Back page of the Adver this morning.

Could be okay - win % of 40% with Inverness but they'd have 6-8 games vs the Old Firm every year to drag that down a fair bit. His assistant can stay up there though - we don't want him back again.

There is a very very good candidate for our manager - currently assistant manager at top of the Championship Cardiff City - one man capable of taking us back to the premier league - David Kerslake !!!
He is my preferred choice if PDC is not coming back.
