SWINDON TOWN: Fans' Trust chairman backs Football League over Town takeover
6:00am Saturday 16th February 2013 in Sport By Sam Morshead
Town boss Paolo Di Canio
TRUST STFC chairman John Ward has applauded the Football League for their diligence in assessing the sale of Swindon Town to new owners, despite the immense frustration it has caused fans of the Robins.
The takeover of the club to a consortium fronted by Jed McCrory is expected to be officially announced on Monday, ending three weeks of speculation regarding Town’s future.
In reality the sale will have taken less than five weeks to complete but, after the prospective new investors were unmasked publicly so early in the process, some supporters have gained the impression that the saga has dragged on longer than necessary.
Ward is a big believer in sustainability and financial prudence within football and, while he acknowledged that the takeover has not been ratified as quickly as most would have liked, he stressed that the potential dangers of an improper assessment of McCrory’s group by the League would have been much worse.
“The Trust would be the first, if the Football League allowed some cowboys to take over a club, to cry about football not being properly regulated and so on. We therefore can’t necessarily expect them to deal with Swindon at breakneck speed,” he said.
“They have to do their job and they have to do it properly. It is of course a cause for frustration but I don’t think it’s any more than that.
“It’s bad luck that it coincided with the end of the January transfer window when it was rather crucial that Paolo was able to make decisions about players. It was also unfortunate that the Football League is presumably very busy at that stage of the year so it couldn’t necessarily expedite its regulatory bodies regarding us.
“Of course it is frustrating and it must be very frustrating for Paolo as well.
“What is important is we don’t want to be out of the frying pan and into the fire with these guys and therefore it is important that somebody like the Football League does this sort of investigation that the new owners are the sort of people with the integrity and resources to run a football club in the way in which we expect our club to be run.
“The Fitton consortium absolutely did that.”
The Advertiser understands that McCrory’s new board will consist of Martin King, Steve Murrall and Gary Hooper. It is believed that the consortium investing in the club will be able to speak publicly about their takeover at the County Ground for the first time next week.

Is it though?
SWP was brought in in October, the question I asked yesterday was why did it take so long to get things moving?
It's the old 6Ps.......
Agree with the sustainability views though, boom and bust is no good.

Was very sorry to hear that Lingy is not doing so well. Fantastic player for us and a really good guy. Watch the channel 4 documentary on us from the 90's. Martin Ling comes across as real class. Get well soon!

Nothing controversial in Mr Ward's remarks. I wouldn't be too sure though that the delay is due to the Football League doing stringent checks on the proposed new board, or poring over their financial projections to make sure that the club's budget is secure until 2016.
It's more likely that the Football League is slow, incompetent, and is dragging its feet over something relatively unimportant such as the fact that Jed McCrory wishes to continue with non-League Banbury as well, until the end of the season.
I don't think the Football League has the mandate or the power to tell a board how to run the club's finances or approve or otherwise its budget and financial projections. If it did, how come that 90% of clubs outside the Premier League are in debt and close to crisis? How come there are so many dodgy owners? I don't think they have the resources or the expertise to do anything like the thorough 'checks' that we think they might be doing
As to it being 'bad luck' over the timing of the takeover, well I don't think so. Luck was never a factor. Black deliberately CHOSE to make 31 January the deadline, presumably so that players could still be sold in the transfer window if needs be.
I would be interested to know if Black offered any shares to the Trust. If he (and others) is writing off the debts then the cost of buy-in could have been minimal. He said he didn't want to cause a car crash, then came perilously close to doing so, and putting part of the club into supporters' hands would have been a decent legacy.

Great result last night. Shrews did us a big favour. Make the most of the league table though, cant see ,Yeovil and Sheff utd failing today. Although they are playing relegation threatened sides. Could be down to sixth with Bournemouth 6 points clear. Lets hope for some surprise results today.
Still, I'd rather have points in the bag than games in hand, but just because we may drop to 6th come 5pm, we could also jump to 2nd or even 1st come 9:45 come Tues.
I have a hunch/feeling that Preston may do us a favour. I also have a feeling that if they do, we wont capitalise on it.

AB knew that up until that point he could sell players to cover cost's, after that he either had to cough up the readies every month or put us into administration.
My guess is that had AB not found a buyer, a few more players would have been sold off on the cheap to take in enough money to cover the bills to the end of the season.

TOWN FLYERS
Hi Peter, After losing Matt Ritchie to Bournemouth, and lots of speculation about Paolo Di Canio's future, do you think Swindon have what it takes to do the double promotion and reach the Championship? Cheers, Adam Lawes (Swindon Town fan)
BEAGS SAYS: I do, Adam. Only four points separate the top seven teams in League One and it is a flip of a coin as to who eventually gets promoted, but a goal difference of +31 shows you that when Town get it right they are the most potent force in the division. Ritchie will be a huge loss, considering the goals and assists he provided, but I believe Paolo is someone who can triumph in adversity and the new consortium who sold Ritchie must do all they can to appease Di Canio, who has performed incredibly well in his first bash at football management. I would back Paolo and his green combat jacket to succeed every day of the week, but with no money for new signings and last year's promotion, you could not brandish the Italian a failure if the Robins do not secure Championship football this term. He is called mad as a hatter and daft as a brush but I prefer to call Di Canio a misunderstood mastermind who wears his heart on his sleeve and makes more outrageous comments than Eric Cantona.
Thats so cool.

Maybe it's best they're not involved in running the club, even though I agree with the German model in principle.
'Taking decisions about players' highlights though just how non-existent was the communication between the board and Paolo. Close the door on your way out, Patey.

A deathly hush appears to have befallen the takeover. Why the "Gagging Orders"? Why does it take the FA two weeks to ratify the deal? Would it take this long if it was Manchester United? Are the FA delaying a decision until after the Emergency Loan Window for some reason? Will Paulo stay in charge?

Benson scored for Cheltenham, didn't touch the ball 1st half but played well 2nd half in the same way as we saw last year.
Risser for Aldershot also played like he did for us last year mopping stuff up and of course the customary feigned injury, which happened right in front of where I was sitting. This was about the fourth Aldershot player in 10 minutes to do this, and amusingly a bloke handed him one of his crutches while he was rolling 'in agony'.
Pack played very well, my man of the match although officially it was MacGlashan their nippy winger (who was a handful but with no end product). Pack was the only player on the pitch who had time on the ball and clearly the Cheltenham players were under orders to get him the ball all the time. He was playmaker and took 90% of set pieces too and looked to have a very good touch. Not a box to box player he just sat in front of the back four, others did all the running although he did have one good run near the end.
No obvious sign of 'goodbyes' at the end of the game he just clapped the fans but I do hope we sign him. My only concern would be a midfield of Roberts, De Vita, Ferry and Pack whilst ticking most boxes creatively would tick few boxes defensively. There were quite a few Cheltenham players doing the grunt work in midfield around Pack, winning headers, making tackles etc not sure who the grunt would be in our midfield four.

Watched them Friday against the Shrew, playing with 10 men for most of the game it will have sapped a bit of their energy. They do try to play football, but are missing someone like Cassidy up front. They are on a bad run losing 4 from their last 5, so if we don't want to be an also ran, a win is a must really.
A lot of happy Town fans seeing the Cherries lose to Preston, (but so did we), return home game coming up against North End and I believe as with last time we played them, they have a new manager coming in. Bury at home a week Tuesday followed by a tough game at Coventry, *another new manager), and then another home game against in form Walsall. from now until then 4 very winnable games, but we have to show a bit more nous than we did against H'pool, simply as said, draws will not be good enough, it's been a while since we scored a late winner and we all know how poor we can be from coming back if we go behind, (Coventry's draw being the exception), so hope we will be going at Trannie like we did with their 5-0 thrashing
4 more games sfter the saddlers, starting with two tough away games at Brentford and Yeovil, followed by 2 winnable games at home against Oldham and Notts county, (two more teams that have changed their manager). We need to get as many points on the board as possible to sustain the challenge and by Easter Monday's televised game at Donnie we should have a good idea where we are.
Will feel alot more comfortable once Paolo has brought in some quality loanees as we are vey thin on the ground at the moment and it could be deciding factor.

If we want to stay in the hunt, can't help thinking draws are not going to be enough. I would have been at the original Trannie game if they had not cried off. We are worse off, because of the loss of 3 key players but think their situation is no better now with 2 suspended and a couple of injuries, their centre backs are very inexperience and I would be looking for Williams to be true to his word and start putting the ball in the net instead of over the bar or straight at the keeper.
We need ground improvements, and would need to invest in new players possibly, and I expect players contract renewals will cost more.
I never have been a gambler and perhaps my views reflect this, but I just feel uneasy about what we don't know, whats gone on or going on in the background of the club.

Think people forget 4 of our last 6 have been away - thus it appears like a lot of draws
.
We have 15 left - so on that form that should be 7 wins and 8 draws (as more away) - so another 29 points
.
That would take us to 84 and probably promotion - it IS going to be low this year as no one is good enough to run away with it
.
What we have seen is with results like Friday and yesterday we CAN afford draws - especially away!
.
We are 3 behind Muff with TWO games in hand - a draw and a win and we go 1 clear!
.
They then have Sheff next and both cant take 3 points - so good for us in the hunt for top 2
.
So we may build up a lead and allow another draw later at a rival
.
With current form of Tranmere anything less than a win will feel disappointing - but a draw should still not be sniffed at as it is another AWAY point
.
I would take draws now at Tranmere, Sheff U, Yeovil, Doncaster, Coventry Brentford and MK
.
I'm confident we can get wins at home so that should see us in a very good position going to Scunny - who will probably be safe and on holiday mood by then!

Well Done PNE, great result for us yesterday.

In response to some of the negative stuff written about our strikers I would just like to say the following:
.
Willo & Collins, 20 goals between them already this season, with 15 games to go. Hopefully they'll add another 15 or so between them between now and the end of the season. Not too shabby a return if you ask me so far.

The Championship will be a big step up with teams nearer to Premiership level that League 1 level, massive difference.
We will need to invest whichever league we are in next season, more so for Championship.
Will be interesting to see the plan for the future, as much as I love the CG the only real option is a new ground, as the likes of Reading, Swansea, Cardiff to bring in the additional income neded. It need to be done correctly and not as Coventry who cant pay their £100k a month rent.
So lets enjoy the rest of this season, get behind the team, encourage the players and celebrate winning the league.

Yet if our current, small dip in form results in draws, then thats better than a loss. Keep the unbeaten run going and it will turn in our favour.
Last year we went 11 wins on the trot, rose to the top of the league and stayed there till they put the crown on us.
I think its not Bournemouth or Donney we should all be watching, but Yeovil Town. Thats now 8 wins on the bounce and they're storming up the table. They're only 4 pts for the top. Extend their run to 10,11 or 12 while the others around them falter and they could be uncatchable.
If your going to throw scorn and abuse around on the Bournemouth forums (maybe one or two do deserve it), then there should be nothing but praise for the Yeovil fans as they have just quietly gone about their game and, playing under the radar and have crept up on all of us.
I feel our crunch game, apart from Tuesday will be against Yeovil. Tranmere are on a slide and we can win. Will we win, well thats another question. Its now the Yeovil match that will define whether we have our sights on the autos or play-offs.
(Oh do hope its not the play-offs)

The glass half full fan (which I am from the football team side) sees that we are 2nd only to Yeovil over the last 10 games for form but not quite so good over the last 6....sadly we've gone through one of the toughest tests in the last month re: pitches, players, illness and off the pitch activity.
.
This time last year there were only 2pts separating the top 6 but we went on to win the league with 93pts....although normally you would expect 88 or even 87pts to be enough if all 7 stay in touch for a few more weeks.
.
Unlike you though I'm expecting and betting on us getting more than a 1pt a game average against the other Top 6 sides as we do better against the top teams...and being honest think we need to win 3 of them...in that vein it will be interesting to see how the others do against the relegation scrappers! :-)
.
Tuesday is now a must win given their form and player limitations as are the next two home games as they will be far tougher given Preston's managerial status and Bury's recent away form (Pld 5 drawn 4...tough to break down)

!!!! Just what I was thinking
THIS FOOTBALL LARK IS SO SO EASY AINT IT ?...
The team we have with out Ritchie and Holland are no way near good enough..
So I THINK if we were to finish in the playoffs We would have done well with the current team we have and the form the players are in..
The next 7 Games are massive and IF we are still in the mix then I will be happy....
And please don't say we have players coming in as at this moment in time we don't

We need ground improvements, and would need to invest in new players possibly, and I expect players contract renewals will cost more.
I never have been a gambler and perhaps my views reflect this, but I just feel uneasy about what we don't know, whats gone on or going on in the background of the club.
Sorry Folks :o(
The Championship will be a big step up with teams nearer to Premiership level that League 1 level, massive difference.

You have to stop living in that land of IF and BUT
Avo's wish, and we'd all agree, is for them to get another 15+ between them but the stats and their current form(average at best), suggest otherwise indicating that at 1 from 3 the best they'll get is another 5 each, which surely can't be enough to be the goals that fire us to promotion can they? especially without Ritchie's contributions -where are the much needed extra goals going to come from if the front two don't up their game?
I agree it's still all there to play for and we're far from out of it but I'm with Chish & OTR - the events of recent weeks may have irretrievably damaged our promotion chances and draws wont be good enough.
Oh and of course its speculation on my part also but ultimately that's what we all do on here isn't it!

I'm a bit wary of LR's form stats, as we don't know yet whether our very recent form is the new norm or whether we've just hit a blip. I have a horrible feeling it's the former, for the reasons Darren gives.
.
As regards "banter", I've found some of the exchanges to be anything but. At times it's been downright nasty. We are reminded not to post anything that is "false, abusive or malicious". Some posts have failed that test on all counts. I believe people should be able to say what they like as long as personal abuse stays out of it. The only thing that really gets up my nose is when somebody has the arrogance and conceit to conclude an argument by dismissing the views of a fellow supporter as not worthy of further discussion. It has been suggested to me that I insist on having the last word. That's not really the case. I just enjoy the cut and thrust of debate; I'll always try to make sure I've explained my point of view fully. And occasionally my last word is acceptance of losing the argument. But I admit I can get boring - as I might have proved in this post!

I did an archive search of thisisstfc and found a comment from Watkins, back in the summer. He said that the Council were then in discussion with the Goddard Estate in an attempt to get the covenant lifted. So there's seems little doubt that it exists. I imagine the Estate would want to impose some strict conditions attached to any lifting of the covenant. I hope so anyway.
