Swindon Town chairman to step aside when takeover goes through
6:00am Wednesday 13th February 2013 in Sport By Andy Warren
Swindon Town chairman Sir Williams Patey
OUTGOING chairman Sir William Patey believes he will have succeeded in what he set out to achieve if the takeover of Swindon Town is completed today, as the former diplomat prepares to walk away from the County Ground.
The consortium led by Jed McCrory is still waiting to have its takeover of the Robins rubber stamped by the Football League, which could happen as soon as today when they travel to Preston to talk the League through their financial model for the club.
Patey, a former British ambassador to Iraq and Afghanistan, was brought in by outgoing owner Andrew Black to facilitate the sale of the club, and will resign his post the minute the takeover is completed.
The 59-year-old sees no reason why the Football League will not ratify the takeover, and will be pleased when his work in Wiltshire is done.
“As soon as the Football League approval is through and the transfer is done, my resignation takes immediate effect, then the new consortium will appoint their own chairman and their own board,” he said.
“We hope the Football League approves the sale, and we don’t see any reason why they shouldn’t because the new owners are committed to taking Swindon forward.
“That is what we set out to achieve, and the club will move forward on a new basis which is basically debt free, and that would be a big success in our book.
“I will be pleased if it all goes through, and we keep our fingers crossed it does.
“We are pleased it has come about in the end, even though the fans have gone through a period of anxiety and uncertainty, and if it is all done then Swindon will be a lot stronger in the long run.”
Patey has been impressed with McCrory and his consortium, and believes they offer the best chance for the club to move forward in the future.
“They seem generally interested in football and Swindon, and some of them have Swindon connections, and they have experience in the property side as well which is important given the redevelopment of the stadium has been planned for a while, so hopefully that will all go forward,” he said.
“I am sure Swindon will emerge from this stronger, especially considering where it has come from, after Andrew Black saved it from administration some years ago.
“I don’t want to get carried away with a state of euphoria or anything like that, but they have certainly ticked all the boxes.”

As much as the Championship beckons, I personally see it better to consolidate in L1 - get over all these issues we've had and build on a good foundation and not be so beholden to a benefactor like AB.

However, if SWP is the role model of modern day politics and diplomacy then it is plain to see why there is so much distrust in todays world. He has communicated little, hardly inspired confidence, and appears to be as blunt as it comes. So as Wyatt Earp rides out of town into the sunset let us hope not too many casualties are left laying dead on the ground, now or in the future. One cowboy dispatched.

The results last night show that we wasted a glorious chance on Saturday, we have had a lot of draws lately which isn't promotion form so unless we can go on a really good winning run we can forget auto promo! Bournemouth now look favourites for the title with one other? We have got a very tough run in so play offs now likely, maybe if we had the foresight to have kept Ritchie we would have had a more realistic chance of auto!!

Apart from Donnie draw last nights results the wins for the other 4 contenders could not have been worse for us, with Yeovil also entering the fray, who goes up is anybodies guess. I said on Monday 4 draws and 1 win from our last 5 games will not win promotion. All those game were winnable, but we only managed 3 goals for those 7 points from 15. The team without Ritchie and the two loanees are simply not good enough as we all witnessed on Saturday, we seem to have a mental block to find a way back after conceeding a goal.
It looks like the gods have been against us with the transfer embargos, the injuries, the sickness, the capitulation of the out going board at such a critical time, no other team in the league has had to cope with such adversities and even though we have thrown away so many points at home that should have seen us flying at the top, to still be fourth is commendable.
Without doubt we have a tough run in with our away games, but at least 6 of them will be 6 pointers. If we were to win all these games we will go up, if we only draw or lose we won't. Our destiny is still in our own hands, but until we get at least 3 loanees in, or Collins, Rooney and Williams start scoring again, it will be a tough call.

We do need to get a couple of decent wins under our belts after so many draws but it will be interesting to see how Bournemouth handle life at the top especially as given their fixtures they've the easiest of run ins on paper.

Regarding results I guess by not playing for several days we will drop down the table a bit, however gives the Team time to regain fitness and illness that have been in the squad.Plus they did have some iffy games on bad pitches.
As to the takeove we all await????? do not believe a word the SWP say´s as he has no interest in our club whatsoever,so much for Arab, oil money takeovers.
And as for the patially debt free bit, thought it was totally debt free???????
Still will be nice not to see that UGLY MUG in the Adver.
So guys forget about last nights results lets get the takeover done and hopefully get replacements in to assist ijuries etc.
As for Pdc like many hope he stays, yet you get the feeling he will walk as I fear the clubs finances will be under strict controll and he won´t have freedom he had in the past.Just might be a good thing.

Hopefully Black's health is OK and not the reason for the panic sale. (Funding another £500k in Feb surely cannot be that much of an issue to a man of his wealth). I wonder if Sir Will had much to do with bringing the new consortium in. From yesterday' reports it seems like they were looking for a club. As to getting the deal done quickly I suspect Nick Watkins had more to do with setting out the needed info for due diligence. What might we realistically of expected from a Chairman over recent weeks. An explanation of the process requested by the FL and their timescales. An explanation of the position with the loanees both with the FL and the club. How the NDA was to work. How he planned to communicate with the manager through the interim. How finances were to be handled in the interim and why this led to Ritchie's sale. Bored now but I think he has been a very poor blinkered chairman.

Yes JW was liked by the vast majority on here, but he was one of the reasons the club are in the mess we found ourselves, he never found any investment for the club, great guy but but not the greatest chairman.
The next week or so will be very important to hear what the board have to say, will they invest or try and keep us on an even keel? Without investment I doubt whether top 6 is achievable. I also wonder whether they will feel that we are financially ready for the championship yet.
Reading Pack's tweets last night he now seems committed to Cheltenham for the rest of the season.

Albeit with the sale of Duncan Shearer I think the price was a good one, but Daglish never played him to score goals, only to stop us scoring them. Think Howe is playing Matt at left back, but I heard on SKY he made the assist for teir late winner.

Games in hand mean nothing, points every time.
We have a thread bare squad and in desperate need of a striker, wide man and centre midfielder all who can come in and be match fit immediately.
I think we will struggle to stay with the top six come April if we do not see any additions to the squad.

But what does his list of successes really look like?
- Failed to get the 'bidding war' he said he wanted.
- Can't pre-judge yet, and probably we will never know, but doesn't sound like he has found wealthy new owners with any money, either to recompense Black for his investment or to fund the club's future dreams.
- Lobbed various hand grenades around the County Ground about the perilous state of the club, including the dreaded 'A' word (no, not Afghanistan), leading to a national media feeding frenzy and accusations of 'cheating' from the likes of the Football League Paper and Talksport's Adrian Dumb Durham.
- Failed to develop any kind of rapport with the club's manager, leading to Paolo openly contradicting Patey's remarks in the local media.
- Didn't have the courtesy to tell Paolo that Ritchie was being sold from under his feet.
- Annoyed the fan base, even though he barely communicated with them.
- Did he also add cart horse meat to the Paolo burgers on sale at the CG? (sorry, Adver should have said 'SN1'). Actually, what happened to Magera??
OK probably he didn't do the last one but he has hardly covered himself with glory in his time here. No doubt his CV will read differently though. As the old adage goes, you know when a politician is lying because his lips start moving.

How do you handle this ?
Do you release all the information ?
Do you handle it 'diplomatically' and say "I have been brought in to find new investors in the club' ?
What could have been the outcome in October if he had released all the information ! Paolo gone, players affected, attendances down, position in the league down.
What has happened ?
The whole situation has been very difficult and may turn out to have been handled well. Judging what and how much to say is not an easy job.
Say too much and people panic, leave, stop committing themselves 100% etc

This all goes to show how having a single or dominant benefactor can lead to problems when their own circumstances change. I feel the last 18 months have been exciting yet expectations - mine,PDC, fans, are raised to an unsustainable level. I feel I have woken up to reality and yet we are on the threshold of a new dream. A group - not a dominant invester - want to invest. We have 18 players almost universally better than the (larger) squad of 2 years ago. We have a larger fan base, we are fourth in the league so a better place than for many many years. My hope for the future is that as a club we can nurture the likes of Thompson 1 & 2, Storey, Oakley, Bedwell, retain an experienced core and regain the strategy of Fitton around sustainable development. We are a more attractive proposition for incoming loanees. The ground redevelopment is mentioned above and many above cannot see the opportunities mentioned by Patey above. It is not necessarily a new set of goals but perhaps it was time for a different strategy. I doubt that Patey will be too troubled by the inevitable flack. He is not that sort. He got - hopefully today - a win-win - from a difficult position 3 momnths ago.

Technically, Patey has 'succeeded' in helping find new owners for the club. I don't know that we needed a chairman to do much in this regard though - just someone to pick up the phone to a financial intermediary like Deloitts or PKF, that's all that is required. It's a simple admin job, as Black would decide which deal to go for.
If SWP have not of found a buyer ADMINISTRATION!!! simple.
Who cares whether he spoke to the fans, PDC or press, I don't. We could easily been docked 20 points by now and had a relegation battle looming.
Because of SWP we still have a club with a chance of promotion and keeping PdC. If the deal goes through I for one will be grateful for what he has achieved.

I suppose it is difficult to reach a definite conclusion about Patey but I do think he could have been more communicative with the manager and fans. It seems quite clear that there was no open channel between PDC and the board after Wray left. Also, I find it irritating that after refusing to discuss ground redevelepment during his tenure, he wants to talk about it as he walks out through the door.

One of the Chairman's main roles is to act as intermediary between the owner and the manager and ensure the smooth running of the football club. Another is to front up the club to the fans. Good communication is usually good for business, which is why so many companies pay small fortunes to PR companies. You might not care that Patey did little in this area, but many supporters do.
However, I do agree that Patey's hands were tied by Black, and you also don't do your negotiating in public. As another poster said, I look forward to seeing Andrew Black's tweets (!) once this episode is over.

The results last night show that we wasted a glorious chance on Saturday, we have had a lot of draws lately which isn't promotion form so unless we can go on a really good winning run we can forget auto promo! We have got a very tough run in so play offs now likely, maybe if we had the foresight to have kept Ritchie we would have had a more realistic chance of auto!!

For what everyone has said about AB yes he has put money in the club and im grateful for that but i also feel he has crapped on the club, the fans, the players and the manager.
He couldnt have picked a worse time to do what he did and my respect for him has disappeared. He knew the score he decided to opt and back Paolo and then changes his mind.

Yes looks like Cherries have bought their way to promotion but fair play to them. I doubt Eddie Howe came cheap, plus convincing Pitman to drop a division will have cost, and of course Ritchie, which smacks of Blackburn buying Duncan Shearer to a degree.
Patey has (hopefully) achieved his goal of selling the club but I still don't see why he was appointed as Chairman should have just been a consultant. If Wray was spending too much, Black / Patey could have just stopped it?
Hopefully Black's health is OK and not the reason for the panic sale. (Funding another £500k in Feb surely cannot be that much of an issue to a man of his wealth). Will be interested to hear his reasons at some point, and we should be grateful he has written off millions debt, even if the last few weeks have been painful.

For whatever reason AB wanted to off load the club by the end of January, therefore making a public announcement that the club was for sale was probably the quickest way to get things moving.
Maybe AB shouldn't have installed SWP as chairman, just brought him in as a consultant, therefore not having a need to communicate with the fans etc.

Like us (an the other 5 in contention) they have some tricky games coming up so are likely to drop points
.
If they don't - they will win the league and fair play to them - but by doing that they could also pave the way for us to finish 2nd - as they will have stopped pretty much ALL our rivals in the process
.
Now I would prefer the title but will be more than happy with 2nd!
.
Bournemouth have Preston away next - with Westley going that is not as easy as it was - as we saw when we faced teams changing their manager (Coventry, Colchester etc)
.
Then they have Sheff U and Coventry at home - not givens by any means
.
Then a Tricky trip to Orient's beach party - which we and Tranmere have seen is a tough game!
.
Then another tough home game against Doncaster!
.
They then have to go to Oldham, Colchester and Shrewsbury who are all fighting for their lives so they won't be a walk in the park
.
They then end the season at Tranmere - who could be in a 7 way battle for pormotion if it stays as it is!
.
I can't be asked at this point to do a mini league for the top 7 but there will be at least 4 or 5 encounters for each side in the run in - so the league is still anyones INCLUDING OURS!!!!
.
Sorry I must have got confused as I thought we had gone 11 unbeaten - not lost 11 in a row as the way some are talking you would think that was the case!

Bournemouth and Yeovil are clearly 2 teams in better form, Grabban Pitman and Madden are smashing in goals left right and centre.
If we can get the 3 loans in I fancy our chances of top 2, without probably just the play-offs and maybe worst case 7th place.
Maybe its just a confidence thing and we will come good again with what we've got, or as Paolo says a guaranteed starting place leads to too many going at 80%, either through complacency or a need to not get injured.
Not negative, just realistic.

It's certainly true that we always seem to need somebody to blame. If we start losing games, stand by to hear that refereeing standards have mysteriously slipped, after being barely mentioned during our successful run!

Sorry if you don't agree, but from all the games at home, there has not been a team I've seen that I consider have out played us, if we have dropped points it has been because of individual mistakes at the back and inability to convert the many chances we create up front.
Concur with you on Patey, he will hardly go down in history of the club with anything rememberable.

And what a surprise - It Ain't Happened Yet.
It'll be tough if we lose the chance to sign the loanees that we thought we had at the end of Jan, but you can't blame their parent club if they off-load them elsewhere. They may need to balance their books and budgets and can't wait forever for the FL to ratify our take-over.
It'll be a shame, as it will no doubt weaken our chances of auto-promotion.
Like LR states, the league is very tight and I think its still up for grabs for any of the current top 7 teams. So why not us.
I do feel that the whole timing of the take-over has given us a disadvantage. By the delay, maybe caused by the FL, maybe not, this has handed a huge advantage to our challengers by weakening our position.
Is it the FL's fault or our current owner hitting the self-destruct button?
Going back to sleep now. Wake me again if there's any new news

Technically nothing wrong with that, but the downside is it gives birth to mis trust, no trust, back biting and rumour, and that element only snow balls into greater confusion as nobody knows what the heck is going on. Keeping people in the dark only promotes fear of some impending doom, gloom and despondency, definitely not the way to treat intelligent folk, the self same folk who put their hands into their pockets each week to keep your business afloat. I would concede that occasionally we may be genuinely unlucky, but if it happens to us then it happens to everyone else as well, so it all evens out in the long run.

I think we are exactly where we deserve to be now, and we'll finish where we deserve to finish.
I'm not sure I'd agree that only Preston have outplayed us this season. Coventry gave us a football lesson and had us chasing shadows for 70 minutes. In that last 20 minutes we came back from two down to get a draw. Coventry fans might say they deserved to win that one. I would disagree with them. Colchester came to the County Ground as relegation canditates and played patient football along the ground, while we hoofed it. Even Macclesfield did the same. Both were worthy winners. If I'm not mistaken, you - like me - have bemoaned the quality of our football at times this season. So I'm surprised that you think nobody has outplayed us at home.
We could have pasted Hartlepool on Saturday but I thought they deserved their point for the sensible way they approached the game and, again, for playing good football.
.
I'm not trying to put our boys down. We are a good side, which is why we sit so high in the table. But we have been poor on occasions, and where other sides have taken points off us it's generally been because on the day we haven't done in enough. There's no shame in that. You can't win 'em all.

A young blonde girl in her late teens, wanting to earn some extra money for the summer, decided to hire herself out as a "handy woman" and started canvassing a nearby well-to-do neighborhood.
She went to the front door of the first house and asked the owner if he had any odd jobs for her to do.
"Well, I guess I could use somebody to paint the porch" he said. "How much will you charge me?"
Delighted, the girl quickly responded, "How about £50?"
The man agreed and told her that the paint, brushes and everything she would need were in the garage.
The man's wife, hearing the conversation, said to her husband, "Does she realize that our porch goes ALL the way around the house?"
"That's a bit cynical, isn't it?" he responded.
The wife replied, "You're right. I guess I'm starting to believe all those dumb blonde jokes."
A few hours later the blonde came to the door to collect her money..
"You're finished already??" the startled husband asked.
"Yes," the blonde replied, "and I even had paint left over so I gave it two coats."
Impressed, the man reached into his pocket for the £50 and handed it to her along with a £10 tip.
"Thank you," the blonde said, "And, by the way, it's not a Porch, it's an Audi."

I'm not trying to put our boys down. We are a good side, which is why we sit so high in the table. But we have been poor on occasions, and where other sides have taken points off us it's generally been because on the day we haven't done in enough. There's no shame in that. You can't win 'em all.
Agreed there have been a few home performances that have seen us below par, that's why we have dropped so many points at our fortress. That doesn't mean teams have out-played us off the park, if you read my post I clearly said we have dropped points because of individual mistakes at the back (e.g, Hollands own goal) and missed chances up front, (too many to even count). Granted, there are teams that have given good account of themselves, but I have not seen ANY team at the CG I would consider better than us and we should not have beaten. One I forgot,
A young blonde girl in her late teens, wanting to earn some extra money for the summer, decided to hire herself out as a "handy woman" and started canvassing a nearby well-to-do neighborhood.

Pateys comments in this article could have been given a week ago and if the league agreed the deal today, why not issue a "league have agreed the deal. But the paperwork will take a few days to be registered" statement.
It may be that the answers to questions raised today have raised further investigation by the league.
Whatever the case, it would not be breaking the NDA to issue a formal update.

Bournemouth have NOT won the league yet by any means!
.
I also think we could do with a better back up keeper just in case wes gets suspended or injured. Im surprised nobody else has picked up on this, we're heavily reliant on him between the sticks and wouldnt want to be relying on a youth team player in goal even for a game or two.
we've also only got roberts and de vita on the wing now good as those two are no back up really. (so 2 more wingers needed aswell as a CM, striker and keeper)
On the remaining fixtures we've got 6 of the top 8 to play away from home (looks difficult, yeovil are in top form) so it was a good job we took 4 points off bournemouth.

You seem to completely lose the point I have tried to make, we lost against Colchester from a very badly defended free kick, not because they were better than us. Coventry I won't argue about other than they were on a high with Robbins coming in, but no way were they a better team than us. Macclesfield was the worse performance of the season, under strength side I don't know what the problem was, but I don't think Paolo put out his best team. It cost us big time and if we had got that next round game against Barrow we might have just gone on to earn a bob or two in the 3rd round which may have prevented Ritchie being sold for peanuts.

Remember when Doug Ellis put Villa up for sale? That deal was done lightning quick in comparison. Okay, Villa might not have done as well as they'd like under Randy Lerner, but he put money in quickly and Doug agreed the sale to him.
Or what are the add-on's to this deal - i.e. what do the new owners really want for their money?
Something does not seem right.. it reminds me of a story I read about some twit who promised a club £10,000 to stop them from going bust and then disappeared off the face of the earth...
It does not take ages to transfer money over - banks send millions to/from each other on a daily basis, so these guys should have funds ready to deposit instantly. So as God would say in Monty Python:

I think it all comes back to what we both said at the start of this little exchange. Some Town fans, instead of accepting that we weren't good enough on a particular day, will look for excuses. When our opposition has an off day, I don't doubt that some of their fans do exactly the same. But surely everyone would accept that the ups and downs of football - including the whims of Lady Luck - affect all clubs?
