SWINDON TOWN: Di Canio hails his players

The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald: Swindon Town boss Paolo Di Canio at the final whistle last night at Colchester Swindon Town boss Paolo Di Canio at the final whistle last night at Colchester

PAOLO Di Canio wanted the media spotlight to focus on his players after they battled to a 1-0 victory at Colchester yesterday.

James Collins’ second-half goal was enough to net the Robins all three points and send them third in the League One table, and after the game Di Canio did not want to take any questions from the assembled press.

He rejected requests from national outlets for their customary post-match interviews and only addressed the local radio and the Advertiser, praising his squad in a brief statement.

“This is my players’ victory. If someone would have committed like my players did, even 10 per cent of what they did, we could be a Champions League club,” he said.

“Today once again we saw the fantastic lads, what they did is not easy.

“We had 14 or 15 and have many problems and today we made many mistakes technically, but they are fantastic.

“I want only to say this, thanks to everybody and thanks to the fans.

“I hope somebody is going to behave even only 10 per cent like they did today and then maybe this club will have very good health for the future.

“It can have a very good future in a professional way.

“I wanted to say only a few words about my lads.”

Di Canio’s short statement will cue speculation from Swindon fans regarding his future, following the revelations he is considering his position at the club and the fact he was entered as third favourite by some bookmakers for the now-vacant Nottingham Forest manager’s job after Alex McLeish left the County Ground yesterday.

However, it is believed that he is waiting for the sale of the club to be complete before making any major decisions. The takeover is likely to be completed by the end of the week, with a five-strong consortium hoping to receive Football League approval.

Once the sale is sanctioned, it is expected that Di Canio will get the go-ahead to complete the signings of Marlon Pack, Danny Green and Bradley Wright-Phillips, whose proposed moves to Wiltshire were blocked by the League on deadline day.

If the Sale of the Club is ratified...

And Paolo get the famous 3 needed..

I personally think we'll be unstoppable!

I think we'll win the league by 14 Apr and we'll only lose maybe twice more this season.......

I just pray the New Board back him fully and PDC get the backing he and his staff deserve.

Long live STFC and bring the good times back,,,,,,,

Decanio seems to be maturing , he still has the compassion which is good and he tends to be less critical about his players than he used to be. I think he may stay only if the new owners sanction the loan players he wants and if we do get promotion for sure he will be head hunted. I just hope the new owners are as committed as the fans

I feel PDC is rallying the troops at this particular time with the people he knows and trusts - the fans and players, whilst they are on his side he has a trump card in his hand.

Hope he stays - but would like to know the full facts from both sides on why there has been this breach of confidence.

I think the takeover will be okay. But then things get interesting. If as I suspect the new board want to push PDC out I wonder how this will happen and even how they can justify it if we are in such a strong position. It would make sense to stick with him as we are only a few months away from a very likely promotion. But then what's in the contract regarding promotion to the championship? Extension? Promised funds? Bonus? There is bound to be something. If PDC is expensive surely he's worth it if he gets us up? Even if he departs after this season after doing a decent job, getting shot now really makes little sense unless anything triggered that the new board don't fancy. Any new owner should be dying to help him push us and them up towards the Championship. However, if PDC doesn't think he can work with them fair play to him as he's done a good job and walks away with a great record and super start to his managerial career. I can't see a few clubs not taking a serious look at him now and in particular his conduct - which is very mature. He is able to keep a lid on things when required and no one can argue with his win rate. My fear would be getting a below par duo in to replace him. I'd much rather Zippy take the reigns for the rest of the season as he knows the club inside out and has a good head on his shoulders. As soon as the take over complete we can stop worrying about our immediate future and start planning on the medium term.

That was a fantastic performance last night! I didn't expect us to get anything out of the game given all that is going on off the field and the number off fully fit players available. Glad to be wrong.

I think the whole situation is still on a knife edge. Can't wait to get this week out of the way and to see how the land lies.

Are the potential new owners not allowed to say anything unyil the League have ratified them as 'fit & proper'?

The reason I ask is that currently, they are adding to the massive uncertainty around the County Ground when they could put everyone's mind at rest by saying what their plans are if the takeover is allowed to go through.

All they'd need to say is that (A) They want Paolo to stay and (B) They are going to try to get the 3 targeted players to Swindon.

After that, if Paolo decides he still wants to go, there's not a lot more they can do - however, their current silence allows headlines like those in the Mirror (link in one of the posts above) to be printed and de-stabilise our club.

If there is any truth in this and they bring in Stein and Newell they can shove their season ticket money where the sun don't shine in future. This reminds me of hen Macari was sacked and fan power got him reinstated. It can be don. The new owners need to realise they are in serious danger of losing the fans before they even start if there is any truth in this or similar.

What a great result all coming good at right time.
I also did read story in the Mirror this morning and would be suicide for new owners if approved to appoint Stein and newall as Managers. There track record is dismall and look what he did to Luton.
As for awaiting approval from the FL like many of uus are wondering how long does this take???????
Does anyone recall when AF took over did we have all this awating ratification etc???????
Don´t know what to make of Pdc post match interview is he going or staying guess he is a bit p´d off like many of us when at this time 3rd in table 2 points behind leaders with great goal difference it can only happen at STFC we are used to it
My wife lost interest after we wet to Wembley beat Sunderland and were crapped on by the powers to be.

Its been well documented that Paolo has surrendered his image rights to allow free medical treatment to the playing staff.

That alone would compensate for any wage that he receives.

The "story" is a non-starter, nothing more than guesswork based on events that happened at Banbury.

Quite why people read these red-tops is a mystery to me.

Agreed as we said last night when we saw it, if true the new board would be committing a very stupid act as gates would immediately be hit and many of the players would not be renewing hence paper values for players such as Ferry would be meaningless as their contracts run out in the summer.

Does anyone else think it's strange that Angolan Red (who is such a massive Swindon fan he still doesn't know how to spell the manager's name) and stfc2012, two of Di Canio's biggest critics, have both suddenly had a change of heart after months and months of slagging him off and are now starting to give him some credit? Within 15 minutes of each other?

You can drop the act now, whoever you are. You've been rumbled.

heres the mirror article in question.....
"Cash-strapped Swindon are ready to sack manager Paolo di Canio – because he is too expensive.

The extrovert Italian faces the axe despite a good run of results at the League One promotion chasers, where he is paid a thumping salary.

Di Canio claimed last week that he was “considering his position” after star Matt Ritchie was sold and he was given no money for new players.

Now Swindon’s potential new owners are poised to change manager if they are given Football League blessing to take control in the next 48 hours.

Buyer Jed McCrory is keen to land Brian Stein and Mike Newell as the new management team after the pair worked together at Luton.

Stein is pals with former Banbury United supremo McCrory. Newell has been out of the game since a spell at Hartlepool but is keen to return.

Di Canio’s exit would be unpopular with Swindon fans but the former Celtic, Sheffield Wednesday and West Ham star's reign has been a strain on the Town coffers, with his own wages a major factor in the imminent change."

what a load of tosh! if this is true then the club may as well pack up now, can any potential owner seriously think that the way to endear himself to the fans is to sack the best manager this club has had for long long time...

The article makes no sense - PdC to be sacked as too expensive
.
Well to sack him you have to pay him 100% of his salary - so there would be no cost saving!
.
It would in fact cost more as they then have to pay Newell/Stien on top
.
Then add on top what others have said gate reductions and stars like Ferry walking out (he's 24 now so NO compensation) and they will see even more losses
.
Suicide is an understatement - you do not sack a sucessful and popular manager!
.
Also if this is the plan why did GUV not break it? He's in the know remember!

On the take-over approval note: I was convinced that the league had to (well would) take 4-5 working days but I just checked out the Port Vale take-over last year.....one person buying 100% of the club and on Friday 6th July they were STILL awaiting approval from the previous week!!?...not as quick as hoped.
...
We've got a far more complex scenario from we're all led to believe:
....
The article on Friday 6th July was:
Port Vale are still waiting for the Football League to rubber-stamp Keith Ryder's takeover of the npower League Two club.

Lancashire businessman Ryder and administrators Begbies-Traynor last week completed all the necessary paperwork for the sale of the club.

But the footballing authorities are yet to confirm the deal.

A club statement on Friday read: "In accordance with Football League Regulation 94.1 - Publication of ownership.

"Port Vale F.C. Ltd is owned 100% by Mr. Keith Ryder."

===
Good job there are no games for 10 days after Saturday!! Come on FL!!
Un- - surprisingly Premiership take-overs seem to be faster - better lawyers?

As for awaiting approval from the FL like many of uus are wondering how long does this take???????
Does anyone recall when AF took over did we have all this awating ratification etc???????
Don´t know what to make of Pdc post match interview is he going or staying guess he is a bit p´d off like many of us when at this time 3rd in table 2 points behind leaders with great goal difference it can only happen at STFC we are used to it
My wife lost interest after we wet to Wembley beat Sunderland and were crapped on by the powers to be.
Hi Mallorca, I have looked on the net and to be honest its difficult to say how long the FL would take as each case for buying a club is different.

Keith Ryder who tried to buy Port Vale didnt succeed and it went on for months June to September but the club were also in Admin. Sept sees headlines 'his offer is dead' so there are many hurdles to overcome regarding finance. Im hoping that Jeds consortium has the necassary funds that are viable to take over our beloved club.

Also the Daly Mirror story i put on the match thread last night and im hoping thats all journo made up rubbish.
Its very difficult being a Swindon fan at present but been supporting the club since i was 7 so 36 years and we have been through so many owners and bad times its unreal.

What we have now is very special so lets hope everything can be put in place to keep Paolo and the team.

i wouldnt even read that rag of a paper.
But if the new owners do as they say in the paper they will be making a massive mistake.
Why would you do that to a successful manager and bring in someone who has been out of management for a long time.

I know he has the Luton connections and is friendly with the Steins but i can see alot of fans rebelling if what is printed in the rag mirror paper is true.

Paolo is massively popular with the fans at STFC and after what he has done ofr the club how can you replace him.
So what if he is expensive. I can imagine as well that if he is replaced come the summer alot of the players will go as well and then we will have a meiocre manager and players and back to where we were two years ago.

I know its all ifs and buts at the moment but Paolo must know something is up and i just get this feeling he is hanging on until saturday to say goodbye to us.

Cant see him going to Forest though as their owner seems to be dictating what players he wants in and cant see Paolo putting up with that but i do think he will be hanging on for the west ham situation as Allardyce hasnt been offered a new contract yet which runs out in the summer.

As the say goes you get what you pay for and if the new lot are going to do things on the cheap then if they think they will increase the fan base im sorry but it will go the other way.

Are they really interested in the club or if they are devlopers are they really just interested in developing around the ground that has always been spoken about and the club will be secondary.

None of us know but worrying times i feel and i feel sorry for Paolo at the moment as he has been treated like s**t by AB and Patey and if thie new lot do as we read then i can see a massive fan rebellion.

Are they really interested in the club or if they are devlopers are they really just interested in developing around the ground that has always been spoken about and the club will be secondary.

None of us know but worrying times i feel and i feel sorry for Paolo at the moment as he has been treated like s**t by AB and Patey and if thie new lot do as we read then i can see a massive fan rebellion.
i wouldnt even read that rag of a paper. GL5 - it's been said enough times on here, the new consortium cannot say anything until the takeover is complete as they have signed an NDA. But I think we may well hear something from the FL today.

If anything I am amazed the Football League can rush through due diligence tests in such a short space of time. You think of the limited resources they have, how useless they are, the difficulty in obtaining information (particularly for foreign owners), and the number of dodgy owners that have infiltrated the lines, and five working days is remarkable.

As to a Paolo pay-off, we would have to pay 100% of his salary for his contracted period. So that would be pointless. But what if Paolo is on a lower salary but much bigger bonus if we reach the Championship? That would be different.

Mirror article is bull, Jed has tweeted there is no substance according to BBC .

I was knocked back by some when I predicted we'd go top in February. This is a real probability now and could happen as early as Saturday.
Of course this is all dependant on a couple of things, can we field a team ? can the 2 teams above us not win ? will the takeover be completed ? will we still have the maestro in charge ? and will we get these three loan signings ?
I believe that the answers to these questions will be 100% positive.

I thought PDC's post match interview was easily explainable. He makes time for our local media because they turn up every week. The national media is a circus that turns up only when there is a chance to ****-stir, which is why he didn't want to speak to them. If they had been there to report on the top goal-scoring side in the country that also has the meanest defence, I am sure PDC would have spoken to them.

There should be a rallying call to support Paolo for saturday so all those that went to Wembley need to get in the ground saturday and its only £15 not a great fixture being Hartlepool but it doesnt matter Paolo needs to get all the support from us fans on saturday by constantly singing his name.

If the new owners let him go i for one wont renew my season ticket as it would be not only crapping on Paolo but also us as fans and the players and by doing that it suggests to me they just want to run the club to tick over with no real ambition.
If this club does get to the championship the rewards are very high in TV, sponsorship etc.
To be successful you have to invest in the right areas so to me we have the manager we have the players and with 3 additions we will get promoted without a doubt.
so Jed listen to what you are being told here the fans want Paolo to stay if he stays you will have all the fans on side of the opposite happens you will have a massive rebellion.

I'm sure the new owners are well aware by now how much PDC means to the fans and, no doubt also the players. Has been one of the most successful and influencial of managers in the history of the club and given us the most exciting of times since he arrived but the hard cold facts of budget restraints may rear its ugly head once again and leave them with no alternative but to show him the door.

We all hope this will not happen but, if it does, how about Shaun Taylor (now cutting his teeth at Torquay) ?

Agree with GL5 above, surely not everyone is tied to this legal vow of silence, a brief statement of reassurance from someone official is hardly likely to result in a prison sentence, it would be very welcome.

All this talk, hype, BS, media attention that is revolving around the club, is because Paolo is a character, a charismatic character, flambouyant and extrovert and we at STFC love him for it.

We are only getting all this press speculation because of Paolo. I'm not saying its a bad thing, far from it. But there are people, so called pundits and experts, in football that just love failure. It just so happens that Swindon are a club that looks, on the face of it, like the next club to fail.

Whilst this is a possible scenario, the opposite is also very likely.

Paolo is bringing this club notoriety, which I think is a positive thing. Just like José Mourinho, the BBC loves Paolo because his is the hot topic of the moment. Succeed or fail, its just a story.

So all together now....

Paolo Di Canio, Paolo Di Canio,
Who needs Mourinho
We've got Di Canio

With regards to what the club is paying Paolo, I seem to remember reading when he first arrived he took a massive cut in wages from what he was earning as a pundit on Italian TV. His salary then was reported to be 3 million euro p/a and we agreed with him a salary of 3/4 million (pound or euro p/a,about £15k a week).

I don't know how near the mark that is, but in todays football world it sounds reasonable, his marketing value alone has probably covered his wages.

The only statement I have read from the new owners was they are looking forward to working with Paolo and support him to get us into the Championship. Until we hear otherwise that doesn't sound although they are planning to part company with Paolo unless Paolo himself decides that's what he wants. As others have said it would cost them more to cancel his contract than letting him get on with his job, if we can get these 3 loanees in, things will settle down, least wise until the end of season and with their arrival being delayed a week, it will mean we can keep them until May, which could be an advantage if we have any more rescheduled games that cannot be fitted in before the Scunthorpe game on the 27th April.

Stillloyal I shall forthwith stop referring to Paolo as the Emperor but if I may, can I borrow Maestro from you? Superb stuff.

The Maestro is massive on strength and conditioning and fitness. Thinking about this long and hard I don't see him taking on another team mid season. I'm hoping he'll stay but if he doesn't I don't think it will be to walk into another job.

As a few of us have said I can't see any downside for the Maestro staying until the season end. He's used the Ritchie debacle to unit the players, the fans and the management together. He's massive on psychology and it's clear from Macca's comments post the Crawley game that they've made it clear to him that despite the tough regime they want him to stay.

Think we'll keep him to the season end and as I've said all along wouldn't put it beyond him giving us another season if he gets any kind of backing from the new board. (Assuming it goes through).

Not many managers have done back to back to back promotions!!!

Not many managers have done back to back to back promotions!!! dreamofacleansheet2

The Trust has not told us what was
donated by the fans after the £30k
promise from Paulo to keep Hollands and Martin so the club needs more support after the last few weeks and
hard Cash is more important than words
which is all the trust seem to be doing at this present time
The club is well aware of the Red Army Fund and have also been recently reminded of it. The money is there when the manager asks for it, it is not a case of just handing it over.
But hey, why not just throw mud at hard working fans who are also Trust members!
Wouldn't it have been more appropriate to email the Trust and simply ask for an update?

FANTASTIC NEWS ....McCRORY HAS REACTED TO THE MIRRORS NON-STORY AND STATES OPENLY THAT IT IS NOT TRUE AND HE AND HIS CONSORTIUM WANTS TO WORK WITH PAOLO...

There's only so much he can say without being in breach of the non-disclosure terms, but this appears to be the news we have all been hoping for.

Now, if they have not already, get around the table a.s.a.p. and put this awful sideshow to bed, hoist the metaphorical Swindon Town united flag and lets get first to the top, then out of this league..WITH PAOLO LEADING THE WAY.

PDC brings Swindon to the public eye because of who he is and this is a great money spinner for the club and new owners through sponsorship. If we didn't have PDC I don't think we would get as much media coverage as we have. So it's in the new owners best intrests to keep PDC here as our manager.

Aargh,

Come on everyone, try and get past the hype, speculation, worry, rumour, scaremongering..... etc.

Patience and / or facts. Thats what we need and nothing else. We will all know well enough what is to happen in the next 48 hours. Keep open minds and crossed fingers - all else is a waste of your nerves and time.

Was there last night at Colcheter and what a great game. We sang, we laughed and we made the players and PDC know how much we care and want them to keep pushing through.

The whole night reminded me of why I am and always will be a STFC fan. The trip on the bus where we made new friends, put the world right and took the pi55 out of each other. In the ground at the bar, a few beers and more merriment and a warm of the vocal chords. Then pitch side, applauding the team, ritual mocking and ridicule of home fans and ground - more merriment. Kick off, only voices heard - ours as we motivated and cheered on the Town. Half time, more beers and merriment and more friends. Second half - the ecstacy of a goal and the nerves as we fought and ground out a well defended win and 3 points. Then the afterwards as we applauded the team and sang their praises and then the emotional chanting and pleading to PDC to stay. Back on the bus, more comraderies and targeted mickey taking.

Got home worn out but happy - why - because I am an STFC fan. As such I am going to be there whatever, for such nights as these - because they make up for the bad days. Players, Managers and Boards will come and go but the one true constant is the fans - my friends and extended family.

Warmth and respect!!

See you Sat and COYR!! 3 more points and PDC to stay please.

Madterrier:-

Yes, McCrory & the consortium have signed a NDA, but surely that only covers the details of the deal that they have put together to buy the club. If it included not being able to say anything at all, then yer man Jed is in breach of it by refuting what The Mirror claimed this morning in the story widely quoted on here.

Consequently, there would be nothing stopping them from making a statement backing Paolo and confirming that they would be trying to bring in the same 3 loan targets we were trying to sign on 31st January.

Hi Louis ;-)

Like your style and in fact I am inclined to agree with you

I predicted 2nd spot at the start but secretly thought we could win this for some time. There has been no outstanding team, apart from us.

When are you coming down for a game? Be could to meet up

Phil Spencer talk Paolo out of walking after the Crawly game , he knows when Paolo achieves back to back promo his stock price will double and he gets a nice return on his investment .COYR

Yes Jessica Fletcher. I am a double poster who thought I'd post the same thing twice on 2 different accounts.

In fact I have no idea what you are on about and also I have not slagged anybody off. I have an opinion and probably know more about football it would seem than the likes of you. You need to get your facts straight because me being a double poster is incorrect and also I don't have a change of heart towards or against anyone - I see things as they are at the time and will continue to do so. I've given PDC plnety of credit and plenty of criticism and he deserves both.
