SWINDON TOWN: One day at a time for unsettled Paolo
PAOLO Di Canio has stressed that he is working “day to day” as a question mark continues to hang over Swindon Town.
New owners are expected to be ratified by the Football League by Thursday but until Di Canio has discovered what their intentions are with the club he will not talk about where his own future lies.
In a statement released to the Advertiser last week, the Italian revealed he is considering his position at the County Ground following a turbulent fortnight which included the sale of Matt Ritchie and an administration near-miss.
However, he remained unwilling to talk about what happens next at his pre-match press conference ahead of his side’s trip to Colchester.
“I’m not talking about the rest of the season because we don’t know what’s going on in the next two days. We are living day to day, working day by day to get the best we can in terms of quality in training sessions, strategy to win the next game, the maximum professionalism as usual,” he said.
“If you ask me the future, I can’t tell you because we don’t have a normal situation. We don’t know what’s going on in the next four days. If it remains like today it will be a very dark future in terms of hoping for something important.
“We don’t know, but now what can we say? You know what has happened in the last few months, maybe you don’t know everything but in the last few days it is clear how I have worked in the last few months.”
Meanwhile, Di Canio said what his squad have achieved so far this year is the equivalent to winning four league titles in a row.
“I’m here, I’m working alone with my players and with my staff,” he said.”I didn’t meet anyone from the old board in the last four months. I’m working and to be honest I don’t even want to listen to anyone at the moment because there are too much lies that would go out in the last few months.
“This year we have achieved much more. People think it has been this environment since the last three days. This is since September.
“When you win you can try to compare against other results in other situations, but in the way I know football at any level what we have done this year is more than win four leagues in a row.
“If we win tomorrow we are two points from direct promotion with 15 games to go, not only without any help but with a hostile environment.
“If it depends on me we should celebrate the promotion now, and the fans show this every time because their feeling is the team is amazing. This is why they still have this passion even if they have an uncertain future in front of them, because what we have done is magic.”
