SWINDON TOWN: Di Canio did not know of Ritchie sale

Town boss Paolo Di Canio Town boss Paolo Di Canio

MATT Ritchie was sold to Bournemouth behind the back of Swindon Town manager Paolo Di Canio.

In an effort to raise the funds necessary to satisfy the running costs of the club until new owners take charge at the County Ground, the decision was made by the powers-that-be in SN1 to accept a £500,000 bid for the winger from the Cherries on Wednesday.

Di Canio revealed that the first he heard of the move, despite having stated recently that he would only accept “crazy money” for Ritchie, was when the player phoned him at 5.30pm to say he was at Dean Court preparing to finalise the terms of his switch. Three hours later the deal was done.

In a statement released yesterday lunchtime, Town stressed that the sale of the 23-year-old was necessary to ensure the short-term financial well-being of the club. However, that didn’t stop Di Canio from being frustrated by the whole incident.

He said: “I had the news from Matt Ritchie at the moment that he was nearly to sign for Bournemouth, in this manner I received the news. I didn’t know anything before.

“Approximately it was at half past five, it was already there a few hours earlier. He only told me that he was there because someone told me to go there and sign the contract. Since that moment I have tried just to think how to move one step forwards in a positive way and the best way for this squad.

“Obviously it was news for me, nobody mentioned anything for me before I discovered the situation in this manner.

“I thought it was a joke but obviously it happened. I told him just for a second ‘are you joking? Let me see what’s happened’.

“It was clear straight away because he told me how it happened. I couldn’t say or couldn’t do anything. I realised that it was done, I told him good luck but I don’t want to speak any more about what’s happened because I still don’t completely understand what’s happened.

“We will see in the future and we will know exactly why one of the best players of this club was sold for this amount of money. He left for one of the best sides in this league, one of the best sides that will fight to win this league.”

Despite his disappointment, however, Di Canio’s mind switched quickly to the immediate task at hand and a trip to Crawley this weekend.

“Since that moment until this morning at seven o’clock, without closing my eyes, I thought how to play against Crawley, which players would give me the quality in this area, how to best use the individuals I’ve got, how to try to win the game and stay close to the top,” he said.

“If I can’t change things I have to go forward. Now only one thing is clear more than ever - the environment in which I worked for the last six or seven months.

“For this I want to claim what we have done until today - thanks to my players, thanks to the staff, thanks to the fans - is amazing. The result we made, without any support and with many problems in the past, proves what kind of job we have done.”

It's all well and good, but Paolo doesn't own the club and doesn't have to be asked by the owners.

A good owner, who was continuing in the club, would involve the manager as a simple courtesy as they would need to continue to work together.

But to Black, Paolo is just an employee of a company he was about to exit.

Non story.

Please don't let this sound like a farewell speech. If he walks - consider two fans who will not be travelling or spending money on a club who treats their prized asset this way. Don't think it will just be two either!

Totally agree -the manager runs the team, gets the points. Points = prizes and MONEY!

Also, in this case, we have a name that players want to play for.

Clearly a short memory regarding the sale of GG and relegation.

If anyone should have spoken to Paolo beforehand, it should have been the chairman Patey and I agree with you that normally the manager should have been informed and I would have thought it would have been the manager who informed the player to get down to another club to sign a contract. But for whatever reason it seems paolo was by-passed. desperate behavour in desperate times I'm afraid

The full interview is on STFCPlayer - It certainly didn't come across as an - 'I am leaving' type of interview but just that he was confused about the events at best.
Black is on his way out and didn't need or want PDC's authority...the inbound can't put the money in just yet.

Paolo has been the best manager we have had in a long while and i really appreciate his loyalty and he comes across as a very loyal guy. But lets face facts here out of courtesy he should have been told by Black and Patey about Ritchie and he will feel like he has been crapped on from a great height.
Personally i think he will see the season out and leave in the summer as i think to him he has been double crossed by Black and Patey. Why is it ridiculous? I'm just suggesting a reason why Paolo wasn't told. Black obviously didn't care, and regarded other financial matters as being more pressing on Wednesday. If he was continuing as owner then I've already said, it would be obvious to tell or even discuss or at least explain to the manager. Patey should have done it, but for Patey, read Black. I would have done it as a courtesy but clearly Black/Patey didn't think the same way. Others have already said that Black maybe wanted to thumb Paolo in the eye at the end, and this was one way he did it.

It sounds like a disgraceful way to run a club - you don't leave the manager uninformed at the very least, even if you then disregard his reaction. Absolutely crazy. Paolo has been remarkably restrained thus far but I imagine he will be seething - Ritchie was his blue-eyed boy. Whilst Ritchie is by no means irreplaceable, a move like this for a fixture in the team has to be planned so that a replacement is ready to step into the team. After Roberts' latest display against Orient I don't even think he should be on the bench. That leaves Raffa and ? on the wings? Can Storey play on the right wing? Talk about pressing the self-destruct button. If Black is in such dire financial straits surely the sale should have been mooted months ago rather than leaving matters until we are left with a fire sale and such uncertainty at exactly the wrong time of the season? This season started with huge optimism and suddenly the roller coaster is plummeting - just hope it rises quickly again and soon.

Trust isn't easily restored - will it happen again? -that's the whole point I have been trying to make. Other posters like to jump on your back for that. Oh for the return of J Wray. Since his departure we have seen a return to the bad old days as far as PR is concerned.
Whilst the club are going through a period of transition I accept things will not be made known to fans but surely those that are currently taking a wage from the club should be communicating to both the manager and fans in a far more professional way. Cheltenham may not be as big a club as us but they seem to be able to make clear and precise statements at the right time.
I have to say the change in PDC over the last couple of weeks is remarkable. To me he continues to learn and grow in stature as a manager.

J Wray was very professional and a gentleman during his time at the club he is sorely missed.

As for the above arguements, get a grip, we all support STFC so that should be a good enough reason to show some respect for each others views.

I think he will stay with us in the Championship, providing the new owners plan/ambition meets his ambition. I get the impression that PDC has a real sense of committment and loyalty not often seen these days in football.

Besides, Black and Patey will be gone come the summer if this deal goes through for the new ownership, so no axes left to grind for PDC is there?

Patey is the link between the board and Paolo, he should have been the one to tell Paolo. Terrible man management.

One thing on the Ritchie sale, last January he had 18 months on his contract i believe. I don't think that got extended (should have done!) so now only has 6 months left, so may have had some bearing on the reduced fee?

Presumably contract discussions with a few others will take place soon, would be disappointing to see Wes's contract also fizzle out then leave for peanuts.

The board showed they are still behind PDC by trying to sign quality replacements yesterday...

They had no choice but to sell Matt, yes I am gutted and from what I hear they were trying to avoid selling Matt by offloading Collins to Wolves but it fell through, the only offer they had that would allow them the time to get the deal done was for Ritchie,

Well i agree that the last month haven't been the best Andrew Black will always have my respect for keeping this club afloat and bankrolling the last 18months, maybe things would have been different if we hadn't bought so many players for fees and let them go on free transfers and signed so many dudds, Bostock for example, we were paying a lot on his wages but half the loan period he wasn't even on the bench, Rooney, paid a fee to gillingham yet he wont even get on the bench despite having an obvious talent. Lets not even start about Magera and the rest of the players who were absolute tripe.

Yes PDC is a legend in my eyes and this has been an amazing 18months with PDC in charge, but all of that was only possible because Black funded it.

Give the new owners a chance, i would rather Matt was sold than us be in administration right now facing a 20 points dedction.

If you were the new owners, and presumably you know that if you are going to buy a football club, just to standstill, you need to put in £2m a year, the decision really was a fire sale of Ritchie to pay for a month of headroom or to ask the new consortium to either pu in £500k today or get Black to put it in, with a guarantee that he'll be repaid in a month.
Suggests to me that the new wners ain't going to put much money in which mean PDC's ambiions will not be matched and conference / liquidation follows.

Agreed, you can bet your bottom dollar that MR was pulling strings in the background. If you compere it to the real world of commercial business he was head hunted and decided that the grass was greener at Bournemouth. We'd all do the same if we were say under threat of redundancy and another job came along worth similar or better benefits and security. We'd be gone too, can't blame the lad for that but I so blame the club for being disingenuous with Paolo about it and... Had he taken umbrage and walked then no one could've blamed him I think.

This beloved club of ours has always had a dark side.My first game was 1964 so I go back a fair way remembering my uncle telling me about a certain'Bronco Lane' and others involved in a match fixing scandal. Our past and current history is blighted with controversy.Owners,m
anagement and players have become consumed with greed.Entrance fees have gone through the roof.Went to Orient to be asked for 57 pounds for me and my 2 teenage children for a mediocre Div 1 game.I am full of admiration for the 700 odd fans that travelled to the game but as far as I am concerned the players clapping us lot who made the effort has no meaning any more.Ritchie knew he was going and don 't think for one minute none of his team mates knew either. The whole F*****g place is full of Deceit,Greed and do not give a flying F*** about the fans as long as they can screw the club for a wage-irrespective if they play good or bad.As much as all this sickens me,I will be at Colchester on Tuesday but only because I am 20 minutes from the ground.Gone are the days travelling to the County Ground to be treated with utter contempt. That readers applies to you as well. All you loyal fans who go to far more games than me are being mugged at every opportunity STFC get in order to prop up obscene wage bills. The whole place is rotten to the core-again!

Blimey LR. You were well off the pace, weren't you? I thought the reason for Ritchie's sale could hardly have been more obvious right from the start. But I have no doubt he could have refused to go - and maybe he would have done if he'd received an offer of poor personal terms.

Some bizarre posts in this thread.

Firstly, thanks Andrew Black and co - without them we won't have a club to support. They have poured their own money to get us where we are now; stop and think about where we are... Exactly two years ago we sold our best player and were bottom of this league - now we have a better squad and are third. We have new owners unsaddled by debt and a fantastic manager, on the verge of bringing in 3 quality players. Due to Blacks continued support we have one of few lower league clubs that has been able to go for two years without selling any players that didn't walk of their accord. We've come to expect that very quickly.

On Ritchie, I think everyone is sad to see him go. But the money was needed and also, I believe he was out of contract in the summer? If this is the case we would have either lost him for free or had to offer him a much higher wage to stay. The new owners may be trying to adopt a more sustainable wage model that might not support this wage and, despite the way some on this forum talk, our promotion to the championship is NOT garenteed. Ritchie is a championship level player and may have left anyway.

On club statements, the fans seems to be obsessed with knowing every details of everything that goes on in the club. Meanwhile egging such other into paranoid horrors. I read on Wednesday that Paolo and half the squad were off yesterday! Relax and let things evolve, something's cannot be made public.

Fans saying they are going to rip up their season tickets need to realise how lucky they are. We play beautiful attacking football and are third in the league. Would you rather watch the gas next season on a rugby pitch in the conference? Pompey and Birmingham having to sell every decent player they have? Rangers kicked out of SPL? Enjoy the great football and chill out.

Very good comments.

Also this greed thing always bugs me, if a player wants to go to better his career (or if they just want to go to earn a bit more cash) so what? I've said this time and time again but we employ a player and pay him a wage, if he gives his all and does well for us, what more can we ask? If he wants to move away for better money, wouldn't we all do the same? I like my job but if someone offered me a huge amount more money to do the same thing somewhere else you bet I'd bite their hand off for it! Appreciate what the player does whilst he's here, don't dwell on how or why he may leave. In Ritchie's case it's been made pretty clear and no real blame can be attached to him.

The next big obstacle is whether the FL will ratify the takeover by Jed & Co. He didn't get the nod at Luton so this is a huge hurdle to get over. It ain't a done deal yet.

And this'll help things turn out for the best...

If life seems jolly rotten
There's something you've forgotten

Stratton,

Agree, Roberts looked out of sorts but I think he wa strying. Ferry could put in a good shift, ok so not his favoured position but he is fast and a good thinker so if can adapt to the predicted poor pitch I think he could do it. Macca should start in normal role but if we have a stalemate first half he should be allowed to drift into mid-field (if Flinty is playing) as opportunity presents. He is astute in looking Lt and Rt so can support Ferry (if out on wing).

For me, it will be about hitting them hard first half, get a lead and then letting our lads better fitness sustain that lead (fingers crossed) second half.

3 points please - In PDC we trust.

.
The comments from him at that time did not indicate that
.
Also at that time we had not been updated to the situation - just informed that contracts had been exchanged and we were now safe
.
Not sure its fair to say anyone is in or out of the loop as know one knows what is actually going on
.
All we know is no others were needed to be sold, PdC still on board and we agreed deals for 3 new players - that would seem all is well and just needs the rubber stamp

Love the optimism :-) But not entirely misplaced. We've seen so much go wrong over the years the natural reaction sometimes seems to be "not this again," but don't think it's time to lose all hope yet. Could be players coming in, Paolo sounds positive, the best response after this week would be to show a united front tomorrow and stick another three past the creepies. As I stated in my post,1964 was the start of my affair with Swindon Town and will continue 'Til I Die'.Not sure how long you have been with us but we are all glad of your support.I have been calm through all the crap that has gone on in the past and if you check the history there has been plenty of it.Nobody associated with the running of the club appears to have learned any lesson whatsoever from the past.Still do not own our own ground, asset stripping to survive after all these years appears to be the norm. Now,after my original post it is muted that Paolo may be taking the long walk.I hope not but maybe he has realised that the powers within do not reserve their contempt to just the fans.
Now that is of my chest, please may we stuff Crawley out of sight and bury Colchester on tues.COYR's
