DANNY Hollands will not be returning to Swindon Town after parent club Charlton decided the midfielder should have surgery which will rule him out for nine weeks.

The 27-year-old impressed in the middle of the Town midfield after moving to the County Ground on loan in November, and found the back of the net twice in 10 games during the 5-0 wins against Tranmere and Portsmouth.

But he limped off the field during the 2-0 win over Shrewsbury on January 19 with a foot injury, and while Town believe he could have avoided surgery and only missed six weeks, the Addicks believe he needs to go under the knife.

That would mean he would only be available for Town’s final two league games of the season, and Di Canio turned to Cheltenham midfielder Marlon Pack after deciding this was not in the club’s interest.

“The first scenario was to not have surgery and be out for six weeks then be ready, but there are two separate scenarios to this problem,” he said.

“Charlton decide it is better for him to have a surgery and be out of football for nine weeks, and we say bye bye.

“There is not even a chance to think for an instant and this doesn’t work for us, so we say ‘good luck.’ “It was a more easy convenience for him to go through their procedure and have surgery and stay there.

“We can’t have him, and we look to another midfield player.”
