Ritchie completes Bournemouth move

Matt Ritchie Matt Ritchie

SWINDON winger Matt Ritchie has tonight completed a move to Swindon Town's League One promotion rivals AFC Bournemouth.

Ritchie has signed a three and a half year deal at Dean Court for a fee the Advertiser believes to be around £500,000.

The Cherries have made no secret of their long-standing interest in Ritchie, having openly tabled a bid for the highly-rated youngster in December 2011.

The 23-year-old was a vital part of the Robins side that earned promotion last season, winning the npower League Two player of the year award in the process, and has scored 10 goals in 32 appearances so far this season.

Good luck - not sure why this came about - but hope its not a backwards move for you, I don't see Bournemouth as much of a good career move, I'm sure you could have done better, trying not to sound like sour grapes but thats how I see it.

I cannot believe we have let a player of his quality go to a rival for peanuts!! We never seem to get the true worth for our best players. What will Paolo do now? Good luck Matt and i am gutted to the core at this news.

Gutted and a ridiculously low valuation for a player of his class.
I can only imagine this is some kind of payoff for the outgoing owners and unfortunately there may be more to follow.
Let's hope we don't lose Paolo over this.

So what does this tell us about the new ownership, the direction of the club and the ambition? PDC must be packing his bags right now. Its difficult to see the positive in this.

Okay this is going to sound like sour grapes, bit in all honesty for most of the season, Ritchie has seemed very much off the ball in games. I think they have a got a good player for 400k and obviously would have preferred to keep him, but for 400k i think we can easily get another player in who can be just as, if not more, effective than Ritchie has been this season.

Anyway, best of luck to Matt at Bornemouth. Lets just show him that he should have stayed here by beating them to promotion!!

No .. Bournemouth will always be Bournemouth ..never going anywhere. Its just that the Town had the beating of this league and now seem prepared to give that up to pay off the ex-owners.

What a ridiculous post. Fans have every right to show a bit of 'doom and gloom' when our best player has just been sold, for a very low fee, and to a promotion rival.
Its not quite Duncan Shearer being sold to Blackburn - which was a real sickener - but its still same old Swindon.

For Ritchie I'm really surprised, I'm sure he's been offered good money, but I'm amazed he hasn't gone to a Championship club. Maybe he is too?

I really cannot understand why we HAD to sell Matt Ritchie for a very small fee, when they offered nearly a million a year ago (he was then a League 2 player).

I therefore have to ask the following questions:-

1) Why?
2) Who is next?
3) Why sell to a rival League 1 team who are also challenging the promotion places
4) Do Pompey receive any cash as a sell on (despite their situation)

Personally, I think this is bad business on behalf of the club, and cannot admit to worry that dark times are ahead.

Anyway, I will finish by thanking Matt Rithie for the good times he had at SN1 and hope the move works out for him. However, I stress that I would have thought he would have wanted to better himself and play at a higher level.

Bournemouth have a great manager and are willing to splash the cash, but they were a poor team on both occasions against us and don't think they will be in the promotion mix up at the end of the season.

I've got no idea what Matt Richie is like (not seen him play), but going by the rumoured sums of previous bids and how you guys talk about him, i can only presume he is a really decent player and will only benefit Bournemouth.

I do feel sorry for you because we went through a similar patch after we got promoted from L2; Pitman got sold for approx £400k in August 2010 which was gutting considering he was the one who got us promoted that season; then followed McQuoid and then Howe.

We can only count ourselves lucky that we now have a wealthy backer who seems to be putting the money in and, co-incidently, bought us back the likes of Pitman, McQuoid and Howe!

I do hope you guys are in the mix come the end of the season as you've done so well and have a manager that has Swindon Town very close to his heart.

All the best,

Matt

Don't get me wrong, I'm absolutely gutted by this, but I could see it coming. There's no smoke without fire. I headed off to football training tonight hoping the rumours would not crystallise but they have.

But what I feared before I went out is what I have been worried about all along. The insistence by Andrew Black that a deal be concluded by 31 January. Why? That only ever meant one thing - that player sales were one of Black's bargaining chips.

So I would not blame the 'new' owners. This was probably part of some desperate, last minute and complex bargaining between both parties.

I posted yesterday that I would be very surprised if Patey or someone else had not secretly already been talking to clubs about the sale of prized assets. There was only two days of the transfer window left, FFS. And Ritchie always headed that list.

Of course, Bournemouth have managed to steal a bargain in this unnecessary and poorly conducted fire sale. £300,000 less than their offer in the summer, and at least £1 million less than Ritchie is worth. Ridiculous.

This has been a very poorly played hand by Black and Patey. I'd love to play these two at poker. If they wanted a bidding war they could have got a lot more money for Ritchie early in January. And more for the club and their debts had they started in earnest in November. Now they've got peanuts instead. The sudden and self-imposed deadline of 31 January was financial suicide, and we fans have only be able to watch on aghast as events have unfolded.

I wouldn't blame the new owners. To me this smells of the old owners wanting some hard cash packed into their takeaway bag - however much less this amount is than it could have been.

It all leaves a gut-churning wrench in the stomach and hardly helps our promotion aspirations. To Bournemouth of all people. Chavs. And then there's Paolo...

But we'll still be Swindon supporters when we wake up tomorrow morning, and will continue to be Swindon supporters through thick and thin.

Rather than something that has come out of the blue, and is a real kick in the teeth to Swindon fans. And without explanation.

Selling your best player, the most valuable asset, at a knockdown price, and to a promotion rival, is a BIG story. It deserves more than just an anaemic 'Ritchie completes Bournemouth move' headline.

The other guy was right ,If he got Injured we still would be without him and swindon will just have to move on.
This year In my view will be the last of swindons fary tale and next year will be the same old story and i will not be going to any more matches if there even is a hint of recruit and sell attitude from the board

Ritchie showing lack of ambition, but selling him so cheaply may mean he had a buy out clause in his contract but I cant see Bournmouth as a upward move but it also shows swindons lack of ambition but at least we are avoiding the A word. I hope Paulo buys wisely if hes given any money

Watching this from afar and being a lifelong cherries supporter who worked down the road from Swindon, I feel very sorry for all the Swindon Town supporters with all that is happening at the moment.
As posted earlier on, Bournemouth went through a similar situation a few years back when we too seemed to have a fire sale that left us thinking did we have a future in the league.
Fortunately for us, we are still here.
It is very difficult to digest, when you sell on your best player at this time of the year and when in the position you are in on the table, why was he sold?Anyway and hopefully, you will have others that will step up to the mark and make it a good run-in to the end of the season for you. Remember, one player doesn't make a team.
Hoping PDC stays on for you as the league needs great managers and even greater characters. Good luck

should have spent the money on a keeper instead! Calamity will keep you down. Tell me is arry still advising you from his overpriced Sandbanks house or does Howe manage it all by himself now? As for ambition half your population is over 90 - now trott on an get your purple rinse done its fading like ya club. Ritchie just wants to be nearer to Portsmouth.
We did spend money on a keeper- Ryan Allsop from Leyton Orient. James wasn’t even on the bench against Crewe. If you’re going to try and insult our fans, at least keep the insults current.

Anyway, didn’t come on here to gloat. We’ve been there before, it’s all just the carousel of football. No doubt we may be in a similar position again in a few years and Swindon buying all our assets. All you can do is enjoy the ride while it lasts. Hope the consortium drags you out of the mire, the most important thing is the ultimate survival of lower league clubs like ours so that we can carry on enjoying the banter. Peace

I can see it now! Both STFC and Bournemouth are in the League 1 play off final at Wembley.
Matt Ritchie scores the only goal of the game in the last minute of extra time.
