FOOTBALL: Guthrie earns praise after Crewe debut

PEWSEY'S Jon Guthrie made his full debut for Crewe Alexandra in League One last weekend as the Railwaymen were beaten 3-1 at AFC Bournemouth.

The 20-year-old defender, who made his first appearance for Alex's first-team as a late substitute against Swindon Town last October, played the full 90 minutes at Dean Court.

Despite being unable to prevent Brett Pittman from netting a hat-trick and seeing off his side, Guthrie, who made a sensational switch from Sydenhams League Pewsey Vale to Crewe in February last year, came in for praise from Alex boss Steve Davis after his first full appearance in League One.

"I thought young Jon has come into the team and shown that he can handle the level," said Davis.

"He had a steady game and I was pleased with him.

"He will know he should do better and clear the danger for their second goal, but he will only learn from this experience."
