SWINDON TOWN: Benson linked with Rovers

Paul Benson is wanted by Bristol Rovers Paul Benson is wanted by Bristol Rovers

SWINDON Town striker Paul Benson is the subject of reported interest from Bristol Rovers.

The forward, who has recently returned from a two-month loan stint at Portsmouth, has already turned down the chance to move to Bradford and Cheltenham.

Now the Bristol Evening Post have said that the Memorial Stadium outfit are keen to take the 33-year-old on loan for the remainder of the campaign.

Seems like Paul is content to see out his contract here and not play any football, seems a strange decision for a 33 year old? And why would he go to Rovers when he didn't want to go to promotion chasing Cheltenham?

Strange indeed Lazaat.
Must be sitting on a nice little earner.
Not helping our cause much though is it.

There is still 10 days of the cat and mouse game to go
.
We fans never really know what is going on and PB may info we don't!
.
Why settle for the first offer?
.
As the days go by Pompey may come back with a bigger % and we may drop our demands and meet in the middle?

He'll be on a few quid here. Maybe a promotion bonus. Fair play to him. Though I'd have thought a loan move would suit all. He'll be out come deadline day.

If he's only after a loan move don't forget he can move until the last week of March so I'd imagine he's in no rush to make a decision.

I don't think Benno is too happy at not being allowed to stay at Pompey and possibly he's now just turning down moves to try and force through his prefered move. All the offers so far seem to have been loans so I suppose why should he accept a move to league 2 when a league 1 club wants him.
I hope a move that good for both the club and him can be sorted as his goals were invaluable in getting us the championship last year and he's always come across as a proffesional man.

The reason PDC won't agree to extending his move to Pompey is because of the percentage of his wages that we are still responsible for. Any new deal would obviously be done at a more advantageous rate for us.

Paul, as fond as we all are of him, is playing a rather risky game at this stage in his career and could end up in obscurity here. Much better to be playing somewhere and remaining in the shop window for prospective employers to come knocking in the summer.

If Chris Martin returns to Norwich City at the end of the month, as is probable given the new financial concerns we now have, surely there might be a case to keep Benno at the County Ground.

I think you're right Rhs, he is peeved at not being allowed to return to Pompey, but if he was asked to take a pay-cut to accept the wage they are prepared to pay with no obligation for Swindon to top it up, Would he do it, I don't think so. Why should we continue to pay his wage to play for someone else of his choice? If another club makes a better offer, even if they are a div 2 club, that's where Pompey will be next season anyway, so can't see playing in div 2 being an issue for him..

He'd already said he didn't mind playing in league 2 with Pompey....he needs to play but maybe he is expecting Martin to go back at the end of the month and give himself another opportunity at Swindon?

I'm surprised he would turn down the opportunity of any 2 year contract at his age, regardless of division. Hope he doesn't come to regret that decision.

I seem to recall he's training to be an accountant, so maybe playing football isn't what he wants to do, unless its at his preferred club...

Don Rogers said he thought Benson was one of our better players and I tend to agree, Benson, caddis ,Rooney back and if Decanio doesnt like it he can go

PdC is the boss and makes the decisions on playing staff - if Angolan doesn't like it he can go!
.
PdC over any player - HE is why we are:
.
The best Football league team in 2012
.
3rd best in England in 2012
.
The current top scorers and tighest defence in L1
.
Not to mention his shabby win ratio of 58% and PPG equivalent of 1.91

Old Stager,

As usual a very sensible view from you.

You may be 'old' but often speak much more sense than some of the 'younger' posters on here.

Patey made VERY clear over the weekend that Martin and Hollands cannot stay beyond their current loans, unless we are magically sold in the next few days, which is hardly likely??

still got those loans for the next 3 difficult away games - could make the difference.
