CHRIS Martin felt both happy and relieved after finally getting off the mark for Swindon Town, but was more concerned by how important his first goal for the club turned out to be.

Following a poor first half from Town, Martin stepped up to slot home a penalty after Andy Williams had been dragged down, and celebrated by jumping into one of the many mounds of snow which surrounded the County Ground pitch.

The Norwich loanee had gone more than 500 minutes without a goal since moving to Wiltshire in November, but was pleased to set Town on course for their fourth straight home win in what was his 10th appearance for the Robins.

“I suppose there is a feeling of relief and a bit of happiness too, but the main thing for me was that when I was playing the team was winning, and that was happening so I was not too down about not scoring myself,” he said.

“It has been a long time coming, but the most important thing for me is not that I finally got off the mark but the overall importance of the goal.

“We didn’t have the best first half, but it was good to go 1-0 up so quickly after the break and then get the second quickly to kill off the game.

“Hopefully I can look at it is having broken the seal and get a few more, and I want them to be crucial goals as well which go on and win us point.”

Martin rolled the ball past keeper Chris Weale with ease, and the striker was happy to come out on top in a guessing game.

“I was always confident I was going to score basically, and the keeper went early so I put it the other way,” he said.

“Originally I was going to go the way the keeper went, but when I saw him go so early I changed my mind and roll it into the net.

“I celebrated by jumping into the snow which was pretty cold to be honest, but I don’t really know why I did it although it just felt right.

“It seemed like the right thing to do and I went with the flow, and it was just great to be celebrating a goal for Swindon.”
