Di Canio urges Benson to accept offer

PAOLO Di Canio has urged Paul Benson to seriously consider a contract offer from an unnamed League Two club, stressing that Swindon Town will not allow Portsmouth to keep the striker beyond January 16.

Benson’s loan spell at Fratton Park expires next Wednesday and the frontman has already stated his desire to stay with Pompey, turning down a deal with Bradford City which would have reportedly kept him on wages similar to those he is currently earning at the County Ground.

Now the former Charlton man is mulling over a second approach, believed to be from nearby Cheltenham, and Di Canio said Benson should think long and hard about taking the opportunity on offer to him.

“With Benson, I have to be clear. The lad is a fantastic lad, he was fantastic for us last year, he’s a fantastic professional. I can understand that now he thinks he’s well at Portsmouth because, even if they’ve got financial problems and the team are struggling near the bottom, he is playing regular football in front of 12,000 people and he feels very good there.

“I can’t make him happy and not get anything. He received a very good offer, in my opinion, at his age it is a fantastic offer. This is my view, my opinion. He said no. It was a one-year extension of his contract.

“He hoped that we could help him remain there but it is not possible. He received another offer after the first one. The first one was far, the second one was very close.

“I can understand but he was really lucky to have to big options at his age. He deserves it because he is a good professional and a good, committed player.

“I hope he’s going to think about that because on January 16 he’s got to accept that we’re not going to give him the chance to stay at Portsmouth. We can’t give a gift away, with all respect to Portsmouth.”

Meanwhile, Di Canio revealed that he is still trying to sort out deals that would take Luke Rooney and Lee Cox away from Wiltshire.

“Lee Cox and Rooney we are working on, we will see what can happen,” he said.

Sounds like no-one, especially Portsmouth, wants to pick up the wage bill for these players.

Any news on Adam Rooney? If Caddis is on a season-long deal with Brum then does that mean we've got Rooney until May?

I'm not alone in liking Paul Benson, model pro, but I have to accept his time here is over, and our manager has moved things up a tier or two with eyes set firmly on the CCC. You can't blame PB for wanting the best offer, as it is probably going to be his last roll of the dice, I just hope he finds in this month a deal that suits all, and the best of luck to him in that quest.

I wish we had as many offers for some of the others.

Yes has been good servant to the club, however Pdc cannot keep giving players away. Especially as PB was given a contract that does not finish for another year/
Portsmouth cannot buy players so I just hope it all works out for PB

Sat game will be a hard one, as all games against them normally are.

I think you need to read the article again, Benson has been offered similar money and an extra year, something that should not be scoffed at by a player of his age - that is hardly losing out.

This is where pay offs SHOULD come into play
.
Say he is on £3k here and Bradford offered him £2.5k - if he then turned around and said I will go if you pay me £36k so over the next 18 months I'm no worse off
.
I have no issue with that type as we offered the deal - nothing against Risser personally just the situation - don't get why he now earns all his contract from us and then another one on top!
.
As for a fee - Benson was a free transfer so let him go on a free isn't losing anything - in fact it would be saving £180k in the scenario above

I know he doesn't want to go to Bradford and can't blame him!
.
But substitute Bradford for X and their offer for Y and it would work the same just the pay off potentially higher and saving lower - but importantly a saving to find Hollands and or Martin

I thought he was in a two year contract from the start of last year?

Totally agree though chuck him money if absolutely necessary.

Wish him well and I'd be being hard ball in his shoes.

I think it is good that PdC is being clear and honest with the player. Not sure he needs to do this in public but it is an approach few could argue with.

I'm not convinced why we are trying to off-load Benson, in favour of Martin. Like Flint, I've always seen Benson as one of the group and PdC is currently stressing the importance of this. I also think that Benson's hold up play offers something that none of the other strikers can offer.

However, I am not in the 'let's slag off Martin' camp, I think he too offers something different and his link up play against Pompey was very good.

Ultimately, if Paolo keeps faith himself in his player choices they have generally come good.

If he carries on like this, in Paolo I might trust. Jury still out with me as to whether this is the birth of a managerial legend but the last few weeks have most definitely been ace!

I think when Chris Martin gets his first goal for us the floodgates will open & lots will follow.
I think it's a shame we can't keep Benson too but look at what PDC has achieved, we must trust trust him.
We are going to get the odd set back along the way but my money is on us winning the league.
Have a safe & great day out tomorrow everyone.

Manc seriously we must watch different games. Really liked Benson but Martin oozes class, completely different gravy.

You don't think Paolo is a legend either? What would he have to do to convince you?

Back to the beer for me and perhaps you should pour yourself something stronger?........

Jets my money has been on us since pre season. Backed us down from 14-1 but then I believe Paolo is a legend and will prove it. Also backed us heavily for the win tomorrow, Bill Hill kindly gone 21/10 for us tonight..

Dreamo you might be right on both counts and I'll happily celebrate with something stronger if it happens.

Why do I have doubts?

In terms of the Martin/Benno debate, just look at the scoring stats. However, I do agree we should wait and see, Martin could well come good.

In terms of the manager, he has achieved a lot and entertained us on the way but has still not taken us past where Wilson got us too. Also, while I'm happy to say I am impressed with him over recent weeks, these have been good times. Anyone can sail the ship in fine weather, the captain is the one that takes you through the storm. Paolo seems to have the desire to throw his toys out of the cot as soon as clouds appear on the horizon.

Again, time will tell.

I would love you to be right my friend.

I hope for the sake of the club being more attractive to potential buyers/investors he does take the club into the CCC. That is no poke at others who have tried and been unlucky for reasons various, but going back to what Wray said, it really could be sh#t or bust. We need to be part of it and maybe just maybe another promotion may sway Black and make him think again. I think that is a positive slant to the situation and for all of those going tomorrow, have a good one, enjoy, and a safe journey home.
