PORTSMOUTH haven’t visited the County Ground for a competitive game in more than 13 years, in which time the two clubs have endured remarkably different fortunes.

On Boxing Day 1999 the two sides played out a 1-1 draw where Chris Hay’s opener was cancelled out by a late Steve Claridge strike, with both sides ending the day in the bottom three of Nationwide League Division One.

Town eventually were relegated that season while Portsmouth survived, with the Fratton Park club then beginning a rise which ultimately saw them promoted to the bright lights of the Premier League under Harry Redknapp.

A series of decent finishes, an FA Cup victory and European football followed, before financial meltdown saw the club relegated for the top flight and later slip into the third tier of English football.

Town and Pompey now meet again at opposite ends of the League One table, but Pompey are unbeaten in their last five visits to Wiltshire with the home side looking for their first victory since 1993.

A late goal from Paul Bodin claimed all three points that day, with Town having won 11 of the 26 league fixtures between the two, with eight draws and seven defeats.

Fixtures involving the Robins and Pompey go all the way back to 1900, with the pair meeting in the Southern League all the way through to the second rung on the professional ladder.

Despite struggling to get on top of Portsmouth in recent years, Swindon have scored four or more on six occasions, with a total of 93 goals coming during 53 games in all competitions.

The two did meet in a friendly before the 2008-09 season, with Simon Cox giving Town the lead before Hermann Hreidarsson, Jermaine Defoe and Danijel Subotic scoring the goals which eventually secured the victory for the then FA Cup holders.
