Paolo keen to hang on to Rooney
6:00am Monday 31st December 2012 in Sport By Sam Morshead
STAYING ON?: Adam Rooney, right, with Paolo Di Canio
PAOLO Di Canio is hopeful he can keep Adam Rooney for the remainder of the season, regardless of whether or not Paul Caddis moves permanently to Birmingham during the January transfer window.
Forward Rooney arrived at the County Ground as part of the deal that took former Swindon Town captain Caddis on a season-long loan to St Andrew’s in August.
With Caddis expected to complete a move to the Championship outfit next month, questions remain regarding how a full-time switch for the right-back will affect the terms of Rooney’s stay in Wiltshire.
As it stands, however, Di Canio does not anticipate the impending sale of Caddis to prevent him from being able to keep the striker, who has scored three times in 14 appearances for the Robins this campaign.
“At the moment we are talking in a way that they want to buy Caddis. With Rooney, I want to keep him. Even if in the last few games he didn’t play, he is important, he will have his chance,” he said.
“He helps me play in a wide area, he understands what I want so he’s an option for me because we are very short there – especially with Gary who is sometimes out.
“He’s very professional, he’s got quality. I know it’s very difficult because at the moment we are doing well but I want to keep him on loan.
“Caddis is in a different situation because we want to sell. If they ask us to negotiate and they want to put Rooney as a part of the deal we can discuss but at the moment we are talking about them wanting to buy Caddis.
“Rooney remains with us until the end of the season. At the end of the season we can see if he can be brought back or maybe we can keep him, but at the moment it’s not in the deal.
“I want to keep Rooney, like the contract is, until the end of the season. If they want to buy Caddis then they are two different situations at the moment. If they come back because they don’t have money and ask that we have to negotiate then we will see.”

Probably fans will more likely remember the 3 good chances he missed rather than the 3 he has scored, in his defence even though his finishing would improve if he could use both feet instead of depending just on his right peg, he does get into good positions and does control the ball well at his feet.. To get into Paolo's favour he must be working hard in training and that counts for alot in Paolo's eyes, ala Risser. Not sure if I would prefer Adam or Luke, but listening to what your told and training that little bit harder has obviously influenced Paolo with his opinion of who he prefers to have in his match day sqad.
Has chipped in with a couple of goals and seems to try hard but doesn't look to me any better than our permanent strikers, not quite sure why we'd keep him if the Caddis deal was sewn up. Never one to knock a player and he's certainly not the worst player I've ever seen but don't see why PDC's so desperate to keep him - must be seeing something we don't.

However - as PdC has said he has been using him differently and we should probably take that into account
.
RDV has taken to that type of role with ease and quality but other may not as easily

I defended Risser last year with the arguement Paolo rates him and is playing him for a reason. I suppose I have to accept that arguement for Rooney now. To me he hasn't looked good enough for league 2 but if Paolo sees something he see something.
I think they are referring to Adam Rooney...not Luke Rooney, i might be mistaken....
Kind regards
Louis :-)

And I hope we look to get the best fee possible for Caddis from whichever club - we should be touting him around, not just seeing what small change Birmingham can muster. It's not a distressed sale, he is still under contract to us.

Paolo must see things I and many others don't as for me he has been awful and one fo few players i have seen anything positive from. IMO Williams, Collins, Martin, Storey, RDV and Benson all better options up front. As ever would be more than happy to be proved wrong. I was hoping that if caddis was signed permanently we could ship him back to Brum and get Martin in either perm or season long loan.
He must be embarrassed to admit what a useless player he is. All PDC needs to do is try more different combinations with the players you listed. Still think we could find someone better than any of them though. I reckon Story could be really good if given more opportunities though.
Wonder who he'll play tomorrow?
Not too difficult to predict eh! lol
Up the Reds!!
