CORSHAM put in what head coach Dan Jeffries called their most gutsy performance of the season against league favourites Wimborne and came desperately close to an upset.

The home side started at great pace, scoring from turnover ball following a break from winger Dan Goldsworthy who fed full-back Pete Hynes to score in the corner.

They then lost Goldsworthy and flanker Guy Cooke to injury, but continued their dominance and following a great touch find from Andy Williamson, the forwards drove over the line with captain Ben Russell emerging as the try scorer.

Williamson added the extras and it was soon followed by another pushover try from the corsham forwards, Russell driving over the line for his second.

Wimborne rallied following a controversial penalty try brought about by a chip which went dead, the referee adjudging a high tackle.

With Corsham lock Mick Mealing in the sin- bin, Wimborne added a penalty before half time to try 19-10.

An unconverted score emphasised a strong start for the visitors in the second half, but with new signings Tom Knight, from National League Dings Crusaders and flanker Tom Culshaw, from Melksham, Corsham held firm.

Wimborne finally drove over the line to give them a narrow lead, but Corsham rallied and following a neat chip and chase from Williamson, Russell picked up and drove himself over the line.

With time still left on the clock, Wimborne pummelled the home line, but Corsham held out until the dying seconds, when another visiting try snatched victory.
