CHIPPENHAM TOWN: McCarthy's quick call on Tyrone
3:44pm Thursday 13th December 2012 in Sport
IPSWICH Town boss Mick McCarthy has revealed it took him just five minutes to decide to snap up Chippenham Town defender Tyrone Mings.
Mings, 19, was today in Suffolk with father Adie, the former Bluebirds boss, finalising his shock move to the Championship side after impressing McCarthy in a behind-closed-doors reserves match for the Tractor Boys on Monday.
It is understood the deal will include a Ipswich playing Chippenham in a pre-season friendly next summer. Mings has been handed the number 15 squad number at Portman Road.
Left-back Mings, who can also play in central defence was drawn to McCarthy's attention because Toby Osman, the son of Ipswich legend Russell, is a teammate of the youngster at Hardenhuish Park.
McCarthy told the Ipswich Evening Star: "He played in the reserve game the other day – we’re going to sign him.
“Russell (Osman) and Steve McCall watched him, we invited him to come in and play and he did well.
“He came through Southampton’s academy – he’s not somebody who’s just suddenly emerged and that helps. I was really pleased with him on Monday.
“We’ll see how well he does. I’ve only seen him for an hour and 10 minutes, but I decided after five minutes that I wanted him.”
