DAN THE FAN: Striker light – we need to solve our goalscoring issues

First published in Sport

For the seventh time this season Swindon failed to win at home in the league, which now leaves us with second worst record in the top half of the table.

Town piled the pressure onto a poor Doncaster side, but our lack of confidence in front of goal was painfully obvious and has now become a worrying trend, especially at the County Ground.

At the start of the season I was confident the partnership of Andy Williams and James Collins would be a successful one.

Any promotion-chasing side needs two strikers who both hit at least 15 plus goals, and with Williams’ pace and Collins’ finishing ability, another effective pairing looked on the cards.

But as we enter the Christmas schedule they have only scored eight goals between them in League One, Adam Rooney and Miles Storey adding another four.

The next visitors to the County Ground, Tranmere Rovers have Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro and Jake Cassidy, who have scored 18 league goals between them this season.

Brentford have Clayton Donaldson and Harry Forrester, with 17 between them.

Williams’ first touch and blistering pace mean he needs to start every week, but Paolo Di Canio needs to find him the right partner.

Maybe, over the coming months, Storey could be that man.

Despite that, we sit eighth in the table, just three points off the playoffs, which really emphasises how poor League One is this season.

There isn’t one outstanding team who look certain of promotion.

It’s Oldham away on Saturday and having taken one point from a possible nine over the past few weeks, a return to winning ways would be the perfect start to a hectic few weeks ahead.

The Latics come into the game having won four out of the last five in all competitions. But like Town, they have been poor at home, winning just three games out of 10.
