NORTH Wilts mixed team saw their hopes of progress in the National Top Club competition ended in Bristol on shots difference.

They drew with the Gloucestershire club 8-8 on points but lost out by nine shots on overall shot difference going down 91-82 in the second round of the national inter-club championship.

The Chippenham-based club took the honours in the mixed pairs and triples, both worth four points each. But lost the men’s and ladies two wood singles (two points each) while the mixed fours showing two changes this time lost by 14 shots.

Although Steve Snook and Alex Jacobs were the only losers in the last round against Swindon Westlecot they recorded a healthy 27-14 mixed pairs victory in Bristol, while Billy McCay led his mixed triple to another success this time by 12 shots.

However, despite this combined 25-shot advantage the losses by Janet Hardie and Wayne Snook in the two wood singles and the mixed fours wiped out this advantage and left a nine shot deficit.

Bristol now face Clarrie Dunbar in the last 32 next month.

Two Wood Singles - Ladies: Janet Hardie lost to Ros Constant 8-19. Men - Wayne Snook lost to Mike Humphries 12-21.

Mixed Pairs: Steve Snook & Alex Jacobs beat Jenny Tibbs & Terry Barnes 27-14. Mixed Triples: Bob George, Sue Cooke & Billy McCay beat Barry Barry 24-12. Mixed Fours: Barbara Shepherd, Dave Williams, Fizz Mace & Kevin Holmes lost to Gerry Coffield 11-25.

Score: North Wilts drew 8-8 with Bristol but lost 82-91 on shots.

THE North Wilts men’s side surrendered pole position in the central section of the Wessex League as they lost their vital top-of-the-table derby clash with Clarrie Dunbar 100-58.

Unable to field their strongest side owing to work commitments and unavailability North Wilts lost on all four rinks in this third set of matches and never collected any of the 16 points on offer.

Last year’s central section winners Clarrie Dunbar take over top spot on 36 points, six clear of North Wilts.

Home - Rink 1: Mal Curtis lost to Russell Francis 18-21. Rink 2: Kevin Holmes lost to Steve Wiltshire 13-20. Away - Rink 1: Matt Clark lost to Duncan McGovern 17-30. Rink 2: Billy McCay lost to Keith Bailey 10-29.

Score: North Wilts lost to Clarrie Dunbar 58-100 and 0-16pts.

THE ladies at North Wilts have the only team at the club now left running in a national inter-club championship competition after the Top Club loss in Bristol last week.

They are through to the third round in the Yetton Trophy, the top women’s national indoor team event, after recording 77-63 and 94-59 wins over Clevedon and Bristol respectively.

Today (Thursday) North Wilts Ladies, winners of the Yetton Trophy in 2008, face a derby third-round clash with local rivals Clarrie Dunbar at 2pm with Taunton Deane or Taunton awaiting the victors in the last 32 of the championship event early next year.

North Wilts make two changes to the side that thumped Bristol in the previous round owing to unavailability with Evelyn Tape replacing Ann Roberts-Phare in an away rink and Irene Button coming in for Kath Lloyd at home at Westcroft.

WILTSHIRE Ladies fared no better than the county men’s side making a swift exit at the first hurdle in the Atherley Trophy, inter-county championship.

They crashed to a 40-shot loss as they went down 135-95 to Dorset in Bournemouth last Sunday afternoon.

Wiltshire only took the honours in one of the six matches with the rink of Karen Funnell, Jane Taylor, Irene Button and skip Alex Jacobs recording the lone success with a 16-13 victory.

Rink 4: Norma Rowden, Evelyn Tape (both NW), Jenny Vowles & Wendy Anderson (both W’lecot) lost to Freda Yates 20-24.

Rink 5: June Coyle, Mary Ballard, Barbara Shepheard & Fizz Mace (all NW) lost to Joan Halliwell 18-22.

Rink 6: Dawn Toomer, Pat Sharp (both FR) Jan Tombs (NW), Joan Coleman (FR) lost to Jill Bryant 11-25.

Rink 7: Ann Roberts-Phare, Iris Read, May Brand & Janet Hardie (all NW) lost to Viv Mansell 15-20.

Score: Wiltshire lost to Dorset 95-135.
