AFTER a fortnight’s lull in action – and just a few weeks away from the midway point in the season – it’s time for a quick assessment to date.

Easily Paolo Di Canio’s best buys have been Andy Williams and John Bostock, but due to us seeing more of Williams, he gets the nod.

Whenever we don’t have the pacy frontman up top, it’s painfully obvious.

His ability to find space and his speed consistently sees him beat most defenders in League One. He can also put the ball in the back of the net.

Unfortunately, Federico Bessone has proved the worst buy – after a promising debut at Oxford he has looked totally out of his depth and hasn’t been seen for nearly two months.

Raffaele De Vita has to be the most improved. He didn’t look up to scratch last season, but he’s come back a different player, enhanced his skills down the left wing and deserves to be starting far more often.

What will come as little surprise to most fans is that our best performance so far took place away from home, the thrashing of Stevenage in October.

We’ve seen a range of great goals – the wonderfully-worked free-kick against Brighton in the Capital One Cup, Matt Richie’s long-range shots and, most recently, Williams’ great touch, run and finish against Yeovil.

But my vote goes to Miles Storey’s second goal against Aston Villa in the Capital One Cup.

Just the sheer audacity to even try that type of finish in such a high-pressured game deserves praise.

The fact it went in sent the County Ground bananas. Unforgettable – a top moment for hopefully a future Town star.

If I were to give out a player of the season award now, it would go to Ritchie, Alan McCormack or Simon Ferry all consistent performers.

Simply because he has grown so much this season it has to be Ferry, who has been rewarded with the captaincy recently in McCormack’s absence.
