STEVE Casey may have taken over the armband at Chippenham Town but he is adamant that he isn’t the only leader his side have on the pitch.

Casey, who has been a mainstay in the Bluebirds back line since he first joined the club in 2008, was promoted from vice-captain by boss Nathan Rudge after the departure of Scott Rogers last month.

The defender is proud to have been tasked with leading Chippenham out on to the pitch every week.

But he believes that the responsibility of leading by example doesn’t rest solely on his shoulders.

“It’s a nice accolade to have and I enjoy doing it because I’ve been here quite a while too,” said Casey.

“Rudgey said to me ‘be a leader’ and that’s what I’m trying to do but we’ve got a lot of lads who could quite easily do the job.

“That makes a difference because you’ve not just got one of you trying to do it – there are quite a few big personalities out there so it works quite well.”

The Bluebirds notched up their third straight victory last weekend as they comfortably triumphed over bottom-of-the-table Kettering Town at Hardenhuish Park.

Casey added: “We’ve had three wins in a week and we’ve only lost one in seven so things are feeling a lot more solid.

“I think we’ve just found the team that’s got a bit more balance to it.

“It’s been some time coming but we always knew that we needed some time to click.

“If you look at the starting eleven (on Saturday), it’s got a good shape and a good balance to it.

“If you look at the bench too, you’ve got people like Harvs (Iain Harvey) and Griff (Alan Griffin) and they were probably our better players in the early parts of the season.

“I think ever since I’ve been at Chippenham, we’ve struggled against the teams at the bottom end of the table, who come here and play 4-5-1 to get a point.

“But we took the game to them and got that early goal, which changes everything.”
