WILTSHIRE JUNIOR CUP: Howe’s that, as Combe cause upset
2:00pm Monday 3rd December 2012 in Sport
HAVING won everything the Trowbridge & District League have to offer, Ben Howe, the manager of Boomsbury, was hoping that this might at last be the season that saw him get his hands on the Wiltshire Junior Cup.
But once again Howe’s dreams ended in a nightmare as his high flying first division side were knocked out by fellow league outfit Castle Combe who belied their lowly league position to claim a 2-1 win.
Boomsbury were huge favourites ahead of the game but they didn’t show the same desire as Paul Sanderson’s Combe side who wanted the game more than their hosts.
Combe’s dogged rearguard performance was rewarded on 20 minutes when Darren Whiston scored his first of the season to put the villagers in front.
Their joy however was shortlived as two minutes later Carl Davies had restored parity for Combe.
Both sides had chances prior to the interval to add to the score but poor finishing and brave defending ensured the teams went in at half time in stalemate.
The half time break was unable to wake Boomsbury from their slumber and once more a lacklustre performance was punished.
Scott Phillips gave away a penalty midway through the half which was tucked away by Mark Bolton to give Combe the lead.
Boomsbury raised their game, but with Combe now getting bodies behind the ball at every opportunity, they were unable to fashion an equaliser.
Chalke Valley FC 3 Seend United 1
SEEND United, who were one of the beaten semi-finalists in last season’s Junior Cup, suffered an earlier than expected exit from this season's competition after they were beaten 3-1 away at Salisbury League first division side Chalke Valley.
Seend, who were well short of their best, fell behind and trailed 1-0 at half time.
That soon become 2-0 and although Nathan Walker’s penalty gave Seend a glimmer of hope but with them pushing for a second they were caught on the break with the hosts scoring a third to seal their victory.
The Lamb FC 3 Alderbury FC 1
Last term's beaten finalists Lamb entertained Salisbury League side Alderbury, who had defeated Worton & Cheverell in the previous round.
But there was no second Trowbridge League scalp for the visitors, as Richard Stevens side kept their dreams of another cup final appearance alive thanks to a 3-1 win.
Neither team were able to find an opening in the first half and it, but it was the Lamb who got their noses in front in the second period with Kieran Fereday grabbing their opener.
Alderbury got themselves back on level terms but they fell behind for a second time when Bradley King-Taylor put the Lamb 2-1 in front.
Alderbury never gave up as they went in search of an equaliser but they were unable to find an all important second and it was left to King-Taylor to end their interest in this season’s competition as his second of the afternoon sealed victory for the Lamb.
