PEWSEY overcame a sluggish start to take a firmer grip on third place in Dorset & Wilts One North.

Conditions dictated that it would be a forward-orienttated match, but Swindon made the early running before the deadlockn was broken after the half-hour mark.

Vale full back Frank Poulson broke through defensive line with jinking run, standing the visitors’ full back up as he stepped inside he got his pass away to supporting wing Andy Ruddle who went over for the try.

A different Pewsey team emerged for the second half.

The scrum was totally dominant and 10 minutes after the restart, an attacking set-piece drove over but hooker Jeremy Horton was adjudged held up.

The resulting scrum produced quick ball and outside centre Ty Lewis rounded the Swindon defence to score in the corner, fellow centre James Haynes adding the extras.

Fifteen minutes later Horton was on the score board.

A quick tap penalty and break by scrum half Tom Haynes, who pulled off a classic switch with Horton to split the defence, saw the hooker running from the 22 metre line to score near the posts, Haynes converting.

Ten minutes from the end Tom Haynes scored a fine individual try from 40 metres.

A sniping run from a Pewsey line out got him to the 22 metre line before a chip ahead and follw up pressurising the defender who spilled the ball for Haynes to gather and score, his brother booting the two points.
