PDC: Relax, I will stop the slump

CALM?: Paolo Di Canio

CALM?: Paolo Di Canio

First published in Sport by

SWINDON Town’s fans must relax safe in the knowledge that they have the perfect manager in place to nip a poor run of form in the bud, according to the boss himself.

Paolo Di Canio suggested after the 1-0 defeat to Notts County in League One on Saturday that, under a different regime, the current Robins squad could be at risk of plummeting down the table as performances and results become as inconsistent as each other.

However, with him in charge, Di Canio said, there is no way that will happen.

He said: “My captain [Alan McCormack] was a disaster, in every decision. He always made a not good decision in pressing forward or going back. If I have my skipper, at 27, with this level of attention in a crucial game, we are in trouble in some way. In trouble to stay close up there for longer, not for staying up.

“Fortunately there is Paolo Di Canio that doesn’t care, that can push out even the skipper or the most experienced player. For this reason the fans have to stay relaxed with Paolo Di Canio.

“With another manager this team can probably sink and sink and sink because they would be worried to put out a 33-year-old, a senior player because he wants to make everybody happy. Not Paolo Di Canio.

“I will work for Swindon and I will make decisions in the way that Swindon can get results and stay comfortable.

“If can reach that level soon everything that comes can be an extra.”

Meanwhile, Di Canio once again emphasised his opinion that, as things are, Swindon do not have the mental strength and overall quality to secure a top-six finish in League One this term.

“Every manager in the world is frustrated when he sees his team perform well and give their best,” he said.

“We fall in a trap a bit.

“When they lose energy maybe they lost confidence a bit but that proves that we can’t stay in the top.

“Eight or 10 of them have not played at this level and when they have played at this level only for relegation positions so we can’t turn them into winning players already.

“It’s important that we don’t lose confidence and we know that we were on top. One day we will improve the finishing up front and the decisions we make.

“When the game goes in one direction with individuals who have to make the right decisions we are weak. It’s clear.

“For this reason I want to say again, if we stay top eight, seven, 10 before December, if we can have top-four physical condition, get Tommy Miller back, Alan Navarro back, we will have some freshness that can help us have a comfortable season.

“We can stay up with 50 points as soon as we can, make the fans happy by honouring the shirt every time, establish this club in League One and look forward to the future in a positive way.”

Might I be so bold as to suggest to PDC that he helps his players achieve the "mental strength " to challenge for promotion.
Surely this is part of the managers job..not to meekly suggest that the fans will be happy to stay up with 50 points.
Get real PDC!

We will be o.k and still challenging for promotion in April. I am not worried by a couple of narrow defeats. We cerainly wont cave in like the pre Di Canio team. Just watch us go after Christmas when we have all our players fit.
Today we start a mini pre season training regime and I reckon Chris Martin will benifit most from this by losing a stone of his fat. Martin is a quality striker, just overweight and unfit.

I have faith. A week off could do us a lot of good, our small squad, hit by injuries, has been struggling with the sat-tues matches week after week. A nice wee break may be just what is needed to add a bit of a spring back into body and mind and hopefully we can push on after that!

As has been said the last couple of defeats have been narrow, you win some you lose some and at least we're not playing badly, Martin to chip in with some important goals after the break and Williams/Collins to start banging them in after Christmas is my prediction/hope. COYR

Some ridiculous posts of late, the same people saying we're going to win the league one week, then that we'll be lucky to stay up and PDC can **** off the next. As you say, all that matters is where we are come May.

Interesting how some are making massive u-turns in their estimations of our players as well after making their minds up based their first couple of performances - I seem to recall one person who I won't name saying Ward was the worst player ever to pull on a town shirt, then commenting in the past couple of weeks about how we have to sign him on a perm in January. The same numpties who went to Wembley last year, called Bostock a **** player and now want him playing every week. Fickle and stupid comments, had it up to here.

........Spot on.

I guess most Clubs have them but sadly Town appear to have a large number who like to make it known but as you say U-Turn or disappear when it suddenly becomes brighter.

You only have to listen to the radio phone in after the games and think you have been watching a different game all together.

Some people even slate the player who has been voted the MOM !!
......and of course the classic slag off the players even before they have kicked a ball for the Town.

Macca a classic last season.

Still I know a Mate who is a friend of your Mate who has a Sister who went out with an ex player who is still best Mates with a current player (Who is in the know and who I can't reveal) said that all the new signings are shitt.

.......We are moving in the right direction.

Chaps, there have been some extreme comments but I think you're overstating things a bit. You may not agree with many posts but the majority have been well reasoned and balanced. Everyone was expecting it to be a rollercoaster ride with PDC, and we've all been proved right. We discuss the ups and we discuss the downs. Most people continue to support PDC, accepting the whole package of strengths and weaknesses. .
.
My view is that the direction is, as you say, generally right but I think we've taken a backward step since the early weeks of the season, with the decision to rely on the dull lottery of high balls "into the channels", instead of taking the game to the opposition with the quick passing style that has brought success and entertainment under PDC.
.
I believe our group of players is better than the recent general trend of results and playing style indicates. Therefore, IMO, something is not quite right. PDC has had a relatively easy baptism as a manager. He is now starting to be tested. Supporting him and discussing his (perceived) shortcomings are not mutually exclusive things.

Still Dicky Dosh would have been a good Manager ....... doing very well at present at his current Club.....?? who are ???[/p]
Made me smile, cheers :-) Some ridiculous posts of late, the same people saying we're going to win the league one week, then that we'll be lucky to stay up and PDC can **** off the next. Fickle and stupid comments, had it up to here.[/p]
........Spot on. Still I know a Mate who is a friend of your Mate who has a Sister who went out with an ex player who is still best Mates with a current player (Who is in the know and who I can't reveal) said that all the new signings are shitt. .......We are moving in the right direction.[/p]
Supporting him and discussing his (perceived) shortcomings are not mutually exclusive things.[/p]
Well reasoned but apologies I am "old school" and support the Manager and the players who wear the shirt. I don't refer to current players as shitt and turn up to support the shirt and the players who wear it. Maybe my Pompey roots get the better of me. COYR'ds. TheDukeOfBanbury

ONE OF YOUR FAMOUS QUOTES FROM THE COVENTY GAME
We were poor for most of the game - no ideas and no desire. First ten minutes and last twenty we did well, why we can't play like that for 90 I'll never know. Coventry were shocking though, took their two chances well but played in a very negative manner, some of the diving and time wasting was embarassing. Ref also diabolical.

I stand by my comments with the Coventry game, and stand by my comments above too. Not sure I see your point here. There's a difference between making some observations after a match as I have, and making generally negative comments, slagging off the manager and calling players **** as you have. Don't want to make this personal but as you've gone to the effort of digging out something I said over a month ago to try and support your argument (and fail in the process) you clearly do.

Ok, let's calm down here for a second...

Anyone can say what the hell they want on here. That means that if someone says something you can disagree with it. You can criticise a performance or a player, that's your right. It's anyone else's right to think what you're saying is total nonsense, or agree, or ignore.

HOWEVER...

To start stating OPINION as FACT is a step too far, as is making personal slurs against me, like my other team being "man unt" whoever they are - I've never had two teams, and never understood those who do - if you weren't picking quotes from me, by your own admission, at random, you probably could've found several comments I've made to this effect in the past.

For the record, I've disagreed with you, but not made things personal - you on the other hand are making up total bull and making accusations against me personally. Poor show.

There's a difference between making some observations after a match as I have, and making generally negative comments, slagging off the manager and calling players **** as you have. Don't want to make this personal but as you've gone to the effort of digging out something I said over a month ago to try and support your argument (and fail in the process) you clearly do.[/p]
Just picked. Random date and found this. Mine is only an observation many players as di canio said are not good enough, so as a paying customer I can say the same under my observation, perhaps I should re word it and say these player are good but will become brilliant? Just admit it we have bought/loaned duff players FACT Where's sue Onwards and upwards The point is you can say what you want and I can't? You need to get a life and perhaps search another site like probably your other team man unt them everyone can praise[/p]
Poor show. Swindon1984
