SWINDON TOWN: Stick or twist?
6:00am Friday 16th November 2012 in Sport By Andy Warren
Town boss Paolo Di Canio
SWINDON boss Paolo Di Canio still has room in his budget for one more signing after a busy day of transfer business at the County Ground.
The Italian unveiled Charlton midfielder Danny Hollands and Norwich striker Chris Martin as the newest members of his squad yesterday, following a frustrating spell where the club’s transfer embargo prevented him from adding to his injury-hit squad.
But there was also a departure as Paul Benson made a temporary switch to Portsmouth, and the striker’s move as well as Luke Rooney’s loan to Rotherham last week has given the Town boss money to play with.
“For this we decided in this way because with Benson and Rooney out, even if they pay a bit and not everything, it can help us to have space to bring in another player,” said Di Canio.
“At the moment I know what position I want, but now it is more difficult because the few that were proposed to me in the last few days are players that don’t give me extra quality, and I prefer to play with my players because they know what I want.
“They believe fully in my regime and I don’t need to bring in players just to bring them in.
“I am waiting, if there is an opportunity to bring in a player in the area I need like Hollands or Martin, with the quality.
“Otherwise I will stay with my players.”
In an ideal world Di Canio would have liked to have kept hold of Benson, but the Italian needed to free up money to strengthen other areas of the side.
“In the past I wanted to keep everyone because all of them were different, but we couldn’t for the reason I have said before," he said.
“I decided for him although it is obvious we are going to miss a man who challenges more in the air, but the way we play now we are going to play more directly and in a manner you can see all through the middle and in the channel, so if I had to sacrifice one player, Paul was one.
“I received two requests for him and I didn’t even say one to him because in my opinion it wasn’t fair. League Two, a long way from Swindon.
“But Portsmouth is League One and a big club and he can remain with his family and go up and down and play football with a chance to maybe win another contract.
“This is why I sacrificed one, otherwise I would keep Paul, but we can’t at the moment.”

Might as well save it for emergencies, future injuries etc or we'll end up in the same situation down the line where the board need to put more money in and take months to do so.

We have had a few back already (Williams and Bostock) and others will follow shortly (Macca and Flint) - so I feel we are now fine numbers and quality - ie we have 3 pro CM and Thopmson in reserve rather than just Ferry!!!
.
Lets hold on to the cash until Jan - then with a few other potentiL moves we may have more to play with
.
I.e. we are probably still paying a portion of Cox Risser Rooney and Benson's wages - but if they were to move on we would free up that extra portion
.
That could possibly mean 2 players could come in during Jan
.
Plus if we get some money for Austin we could make them big money signings to really push us on
.
4 massive games coming up in the next 6 with 3 at home - by Xmas we could be really well placed!

It doesn't say if we signed 2 more we would go over 65% - just budget - our 65% limit might be £5m now for all we know as the amount of equity put in was not released
.
I'm pretty certain the board would have not made it that £4.5m was our absolute max - as they will want to avoid that type of situation again
.
I guess if we did get into another injury crisis they would want the option to say - yes you can spend more - something they didn't have this time
.
This shows he is learning as like he said in the past he would have simply signed another player or held on to Benson - but is not doing this anymore

FIFA are not happy with this arrangement of emergency loans and are looking to ban them in 2014 and maybe change the transfer window set up, again!

Reading ensured they got 40% of all future receipts so did get a slice when he was sold on again to Forest
.
However - as far as I'm aware that is not the norm and the original club will only get the percentage of the initial sale - i.e Poole would have got say 20% of the £1.2m we got
.
Ignoring Poole - Austin going for £2m like Cox did would net us £120k at 15% or £160k at 20%
.
Then for every extra £1m we would get £150k or £200k
.
SWP was clearly trying to play it down to not get the hopes up - but if Austin is sold for £8m we should see £1m at 15% or £1.4m at 20%
.
If he is sold for £10m then we should get £1.3m at 15% or £1.7m at 20%
.
So even then if we had to pass some (say 20%) on we would still get between £800k - £1.4m!!!
.
Granted if he goes for around £5m - it won't be that high - but considering they sold Rodriquez for over £7m and Austin is the highest scorer in Europe - £8-10m is not that unrealistic and therefore, a £1m pay day for us is not that unrealistic

Sounds like the money is burning a hole in Paolo's pocket but don't think we need another signing currently. Two quality lads in yesterday who will really add something to the team but we don't want to be bringing someone else in for the sake of it. I can't see Austin going for more that £6million more likely £5mill....but what is the deal with % sell on clauses? I assume we only get the money when Burnley get their installment? i.e. not expecting anyone to pay the whole lot up front hence it could be 50% now and 50% next season...or do they have to settle the sell on clauses straight away?

Multiply the square root of burger all by the cosine of who ate all the Pi's then divide by the coefficient tangent of squat diddly. Finally take away the first number that comes into your head and then subtract the combined league goals total that our two lead strikers have scored between them this season (clue:-single figure answer) and you'll get an idea of how much CA's move is worth.

To simplify all the speculation of how much of a sell on fee Town will receive for CA if and when he moves - all potential LR's should use the following formula:- Multiply the square root of burger all by the cosine of who ate all the Pi's then divide by the coefficient tangent of squat diddly. I'm not having a dig at PDC, but can anyone explain/interpret this comment? What is it about Benson that makes him less suited than the others to playing "more directly and in a manner you can see all through the middle and in the channel". And is this PDC's confirmation that lumping the ball forward is the way we are going to play from now on? Or is he saying the opposite - that we are going to revert to playing football through the middle? I hope it's the latter, because the fare served up at the County Ground recently has been dire - parst of the Villa and Coventry games excepted. (That's the football fare by the way. I'll let Jayden speak for the burgers!)

Paynter was excellent in that role for us - we played more football with him as he is not your typical target man - we had to play it to him more than lump it and hope
.
Collins for me is similar to this and as it was reported he excelled at this part of the game against Villa and Sheff U
.
So what this means is we will be playing direct (as quick and forward) compared to long (as in hump)
.
This should suit Collins and Martin
.
With Colins we can look for him to control it on his chest and start things off from there and Martins more to feet - as that is what he said he likes
.
Channels is simply to utilise Williams (or Storey's) pace - this would mean clever balls between the fullback and centre back to release Williams to try and get in one on one or to get into a position to set something up
.
All described above is exactly how we played away to Pompey and we looked excellent

Room for one more would be based on the £4.5m budget rather than 65% limit
.
I'm sure the board would sanction a loan if Wes got injured even if we went over budget as that would be vital
.
Unless of course as you say a chunk of the £4.5m has always been held back for that scenario
.
As for players moving - have no issue with players moving on - its just about timing
.
The summer is the time players should make the move if they suddenly feel they need to move on for career development - as Said above Cox and Parkin saw out the year and got decent moves
.
January should be when a club is trying to strengthen and therefore poaches a player - but as its Jan they pay a premium to get them
.
It's why managers like Wenger are reluctant to deal in Jan as they don't want to pay over the odds
.
Yet Austin media moans and transfer request removed all of that premium
.
Had he not done that, continued in jan like he did in 2010 and then a club came in with a massive offer - it would have been fair enough
.
Luke Rooney is a prime example - he never requested a move or complained to the media and we are forced to pay a premium
.
It worked for us as he do help us secure the title and Gills were happy as they got a decent fee
.
It's give and take in football but I just felt after we gave Austin so much he didn't return it like others have - he had been a professional for just over a year and was only 21 - he didn't need to move then to "save his career"
.
See out the year and then go - was that really too much to ask?

January should be when a club is trying to strengthen and therefore poaches a player - but as its Jan they pay a premium to get them . It's why managers like Wenger are reluctant to deal in Jan as they don't want to pay over the odds . Yet Austin media moans and transfer request removed all of that premium . Had he not done that, continued in jan like he did in 2010 and then a club came in with a massive offer - it would have been fair enough . Luke Rooney is a prime example - he never requested a move or complained to the media and we are forced to pay a premium . It worked for us as he do help us secure the title and Gills were happy as they got a decent fee . It's give and take in football but I just felt after we gave Austin so much he didn't return it like others have - he had been a professional for just over a year and was only 21 - he didn't need to move then to "save his career" . See out the year and then go - was that really too much to ask?
Room for one more would be based on the £4.5m budget rather than 65% limit..
so the the 4.5m is nothing to do with the 65% limit..BIG ?
Then you say players should only move in the summer...THEN You say January should be when a club is trying to strengthen and therefore poaches a player
AND NO IM NOT HAVING A POP AT YOU

As I said earlier - I doubt the board have made it that we couldn't get a loan if needed

I'm sure the board would sanction a loan if Wes got injured even if we went over budget as that would be vital

But I cannot help thinking of Paul Benson, sat in some faceless hotel in Portsmouth tonight and wondering how it all went wrong at Swindon.
Isn't this the same Benson that PDC described as the ultimate professional who looks after himself?
Loyalty to players is clearly not part of PDC's make up, which is his choice as Manager, but I will always think of him as Judas from now on.

But I am really surprised that you of all people, could be so cold about Paul Benson and how PDC has treated him.
However, you are entitled to your view and at the same time, you perhaps appreciate that there is no way I can agree with you on it.
Judas Di Canio has made his mark in the sand on his ongoing lack of any sort of loyalty with Benson and players will surely see through him from now on.

That said, his pace is obviously lacking at 33, and he's probably not going to bag us a hatful of goals. I agree with others in that League 1 is his maximum level. But I'm not worried about building a team for the Championship. Having been in League 1 and 2 for so many years, I would be delighted just to get out of League 1.
We can worry about building a team for the Championship once we're in the Championship.
Anyway, welcome to Martin, hope he's going to do the business for us.

joey butler wrote:Joey, I think you misunderstand me. Benson has done a marvellous job for us and I would have hoped we could keep him, even if only as cover. But as we all know PDC has to work within a budget and we have to face the fact that if players are coming in, players have to be going out. And would Benson have been happy to stay with us as a bit part player anyway. Whether these are the right moves, only time will tell.

There are many aspects of PDC's management that I like and there are some that I don't like. But I'm not going to accuse him of treating a player badly when all I know is that he's made a judgment based on football and finance.
