SWINDON TOWN: "I'll do my job...you do yours"
6:00am Friday 9th November 2012 in Sport By Sam Morshead
Swindon Town boss Paolo Di Canio
PAOLO Di Canio has taken an unprompted swipe at Sir William Patey after the Swindon Town chairman upset his manager by suggesting more diligence needs to be taken in the signing of new players.
On Tuesday, Patey revealed that the transfer embargo hanging over the club had been lifted thanks to an injection of equity by majority shareholder Andrew Black, handing Di Canio the funds to bring in reinforcements.
However, he suggested that any further additions to the squad should be screened more thoroughly to prevent players carrying knocks from joining Town - as happened with the capture of Giles Coke from Sheffield Wednesday.
One such individual could be Coke’s Wednesday teammate, Kieran Lee, who the Advertiser understands has been the subject of interest from the Robins over the past few days, while another Owl in Gary Madine was strongly linked with a loan move to the County Ground yesterday.
Evidently, Patey’s comments did not go down well with Di Canio.
When asked at his press conference prior to this weekend’s clash to Walsall about the possibility of new players being drafted in, he said: “I take advantage of your question because I also want to clarify something that went out.
“It’s far from the truth when someone is talking about being careful bringing in players, having medical tests because of the Coke situation with Sheffield.
“The people speaking have to understand and know exactly how we work.
“Every time we have a specialist and a specific medical test with every single player - even if we loan one player for one day.
“The Coke situation was the last day of the transfer window.
“We didn’t have enough time when he was travelling down and if we had signed him before anyway we called the physio at Sheffield and asked if this guy had a problem in the past.
“Just because three days before he played against Fulham in the cup, he was fully fit.
“Anyway, even if we made a specific medical test, it is a problem that you can’t discover if someone doesn’t mention the problem.
“It is under the foot, not in a joint. It’s a chronic inflammation that you discover if someone tells you they had a problem in the past.
“Nobody mentioned this problem.
“Before speaking the people have to have knowledge of what we have done in the last few months and then maybe they can say something.
“There is no reason to mention that we have to be careful. This is my job, this is our job.
“The people at the top, in the board, don’t have to speak about this job.
“They have to put in money or not put in money if they don’t want to but not talk about fitness.
“They can ask ‘why this and why that?’ but not talk about being careful like there was a mistake made by Paolo Di Canio, Phil Spencer, the physio. No, no, no.
“We were perfect in every single situation. We did a fantastic job.
“We don’t have to be careful, we know how to be careful, we know how to work.
“Everybody has to sort out the financial problems if they care about this club and the squad.
“They can care about the club but not about the squad.
“In my opinion, a normal club should care about the club and then about the squad, which is the heart of the club and don’t mention about transfers.
“We know what we’re doing.“We have already done history with this club.
“Someone has to do his job and see if they are part of the history of this club in the future.”

IMO these words were from Andrew Black , probably on the lines of ' make sure this money isn't wasted, and SWP is just the spokesperson. I think its a shot over the bows for PDC , who reacted as expected, after the long lead and freedom he was given by JWray.
I am sure the 'due dilligence' remark was also about not wasting the money as well as injuries and looking into contract specifics.

Coke is not alone is he, just look at Atiku, Esjas and many other players that have been re cycled here. I think it owner has a right to express a concern over the way his money is spent, and then there was the Czech guy, how much money did that cost us, Magera, might be a good player but just didn't fit in here. Pity, but the costs must be adding up.
The very last thing we need is for Black to give up on this club, especially given the huge amount of money he has willingly put in.

Put it this way and in a simple way.. There is one person who could tell Pdc he had a injury because it was a part of the foot that isn't tested as its not a joint or a muscle and that person was coke .. All our injurys have been picked up in games
All you Pdc witch hunters better be carefull because you don't know what you got until its gone

PDC has done wonders for Swindon. We are depleted through injuries and yet still up there. Oh, by the way, we were champions last year.
He and his staff work their socks of for Swindon beyond the working hours many other managers would. So why wouldnt PDC be a bit sensitive about a careless remark from a chairman which seems to imply that this guy Coke wasnt checked out properly. If I was working really hard and managing a company and the chairman made a comment like that during a difficult period after so much success I would be pee'd off too.
Many teams would love to be in our position in the table. We got more injuries because of a cup run. Its normal to need to seek additional players at these times but he couldnt and not all loanees work out.
PDC thanks for getting us promoted, thanks for the cup runs, thanks for maintaining a health position in league 1 despite the player injuries and please ignore the early risers who dont seem to know how fortunate we are to be in this position in the league.

I'm not sure if criticism is justified on medical grounds of some of PDC's signings. Fan of his or not though, you do have to say that some of his signings in the past have not lived up to expectations.

More due diligence should be done on signings as we are throwing too much money at players who are apparently good enough to be signed then to discard them weeks later as not being up to the job. The list is endless over his time in charge.
Also, PDC has whinged about the embargo and the need for players for so long, you would have thought he would have all his targets would have been lined up and signed on the dotted line as soon as the embargo was lifted.

I have got sick to death of the constant whingeing and moaning on here. Yes some of the signings did not work it's a learning curve for PDC but who am I to moan or complain my team won the league last season and we are sitting ok in the league this season and we have had some great results against higher opposition. So what if he has the odd outburst and says how he feels and says what a lot if us are thinking. You can not have it both ways moan when we are kept in the dark and moan when Pdc lets out a few home truths. Players are to wrapped up these days!!
To all you moaners just be carefull what you wish for and continue this endless negative crap you mind just be back to the dark days!!
I for one will continue to follow my team home and away and support Pdc and leave you all to your keyboards!!!!

Was thinking last night about the "famous five" he signed before the end of the transfer window.
It occurred to me that after getting rid of Caddis for his (admitted) lack of training he signed both Ward and Bostock not only for their footballing talent but what they would bring the group as a whole, particularly for the youngsters. Ward very health conscious and Bostock with his beliefs being a very calming influence. Reinforcing the managers beliefs that these players are professional athletes like Olympians and should live accordingly.
It is amazing to me that all this talk of disaster. Ferry lost his mate Caddis but seems to have matured (see walking home from ground with partner and baby) and is now being far more consistent in his performances. He's always been a fans favourite because he's a ball player and a character but his total commitment and runs, for 90 minutes has been impressive. Impressive also against Sheff Utd as he talked LT through the game, pointing to positional spots for him and cajooling him as the game moved on around.
Of course there was a high turnover last year as Paolo tried to get to grips with learning what was needed. The idea that any manager only buys perfect players is just laughable. Bebe for £9 million anyone? Just remember Paolo signed Wes which is as good as five signings. Dismissing this years intake after 16 games seems a tad premature to me.
I will continue to stick my neck out and say we will still win the league. Love one day to see everyone behind the team, manager and board.

LR, how does our scouting setup compare to other clubs in the league? No expert on the matter but it is embarrassingly obvious hat Paolo/Spencer are very lacking in this department. Should more emphasis be put on scouting?
As for accusations of moaning, the only moaning I'm seeing this morning is from Paolo blaming everyone else again for hidden injuries etc......that particular buck stops with you my friend.

STFC are 7th in the league, great chance this year of promotion and financially secure.
This is the least concerned I have been for years!
Still find it strange everyone cares what is said to the press by the manager/board/player
s, controversial or not. Its all about the the two numbers on a Saturday afternoon and where we are in the table in May. IF that is poor, then everyone has every right to start all the criticism...until then though, why not just concentrate on the actual football?

We are now on our third Chairman since the bail out etc, and also we have had Malpas, Wilson, Hart and now the present man in charge, but on paper we are no further forward than when the take over took place. We are still in L1 despite all the money poured in. Despite his undoubted achievements last season and signs of further success this term I do feel Black has more than a right to say, " Hey, Just be careful with my money please". I don't think anybody can blame him for that. Our manager was lucky to find Wray and have the whirlwind they did last season, but I can see Black's point of view as well.
A bit of caution before spending somebody else's money is not a bad thing, and given we have signed players for money and let them go for free is not always prudent book keeping. Black is entitled to voice an opinion, he owns the club, without him, we are nothing, perhaps the manager should consider that before basically telling him to mind his own business, STFC is his business, he owns it, and he pays ALL the wages.

Pateys comments were ill judged, even if they were from Black he should have spoken with the gaffer 1-1. There's comments on here about Paolo keeping comments in house and I think Patey needs to do the same. I liked his openness and trying to connect with the fans answering questions but that one was a little too chatty and open.
It was ill judged and was always going to anger Paolo or any other manager, for me it's a step backwards and something Wray would never have said in public even if he did give that message in private. It was a clear swipe and one without historical knowledge. This article is a reaction to that and that's all. It should be smoothed over, learnt from and move on.
Paolo is reactive, I like him but he's reactive. People are far too quick to wallop him and everyone else on here. Give Patey time to get into his role and learn what he's doing. Give Paolo a break and just realise that he's firey and that's part of what makes him great and just enjoy the football. For once it's fun to be a Swindon fan, we could be with Paul Hart as manager and say Ricky Hunt as Chairman, fancy that instead ???

Gary Madine's loan move from Sheffield Wednesday to League One Swindon has been put on hold.
The striker was set to enter talks with Town on Friday but the 22-year-old has remained with the Owls squad for their game against Middlesbrough.
Madine, who has played 15 games for Wednesday this season, scoring once, is now expected to sign a deal next week.
Swindon had a transfer embargo lifted earlier this week, allowing manager Paolo Di Canio to add to his squad.

The other scenario is black says to wray why the hell have you allowed this to happen 4.5million for this season is spent before the end of sept and we have an embargo and i have the manager publicly lambasting his players and wanting money to replace players that he has fallen out with and moans sort it out now. Black was right to get rid of wray if he has allowed dicanio to run riot with the budget. The new chairman is in that position for the future of the club and lets face it to have spent the entire seasons budget in under 3 months is not good. I can see dicanio going, he has indicated that if a prem club comes in for him he will go. I like the guys passion but he would have us believe that we have never had success here. Dicanio would bankrupt man city and still have the audacity to complain. Andy King, Danny Wilson never had any of what he had so i would say bye bye dicanio if the efforts made for you are not good enough and put a sock in it.

The owners have every right to take an interest in where their money's going, and far more right to an opinion than ANY of us!
On the flip side, the above nonsense is clearly based on nothing - when has he said if a prem club comes in he'll go? There was rumours of Bolton coming in and all he'd said was it's flattering cause they obviously think I'm doing well - certainly not the sign of someone who wants off at the first opportunity.
The moderates are the only ones with their heads screwed on today - those that support PDC but equally don't want him to blow the future of the club with unreasonable demands for funding. Those attacking DiCanio OR the board have totally missed the point.

Okay Di Canio may well sign lots of players and is a pit rotational. But you could say that's his choice, his style and indeed its required as the club look tom push up. It's normal to want better players when you go up.

He is, what's more, described as a 'striker'. Though whether one goal in fifteen appearances for Wednesday suggests that he is any better than the strikers who were on our bench for the Sheffield United game is perhaps doubtful.
Anyway, I thought it was midfielders which we are currently short of.
Regarding DiCanio; I can't help liking him, and he certainly did a great job last season. Nevertheless, in my opinion, criticising players, and particularly individual players, in public is bad man management. It might occassionally motivate one or two players, but it will, equally, demotivate others.
Paolo; please LEARN from the proven greats of football management. Which is to say, by all means let them have it in the dressing room, but support them in public.

Every manager makes mistakes with players even the best ie Fergie has made some clangers as has Wenger and all levels of managers have so some people need to cut the C**P out with their comments. Paolo has been the best thing for this club in a long time and we need to be fully behind him and accept that not all the players that we sign will turn out good that is a fact of life.
When we signed Paynter he couldnt hit a barn door at his previous clubs and when he joined us him and Austin hit 40 goals between them so there are alot of things to take into consideration when hew players are signed whether they will work well with the players here etc and style of play we have and sometimes it takes longer to adjust. Paynter made the biggest mistake of moving to the championship as no way is he good enough for that level and he is back in L1 which is his limit but he went for money and it backfired on him.

2012 Paolo had a budget last year, he won the league, I find it incredible people blame him for poor signings and wasting money when in Wes alone he will have made on paper more than any loses. Personally I think all of Collins, Millier, Williams and Troy will prove to be good signings. And what about Macca? We have a manager with the belief to change a players position and make him and us better for it.
16 league games and our fans are writing our won players off. Positive mental attitude. As London has also said the playing budget is exactly that under Wilson, hardly a kings ransom and lest I'm mistaken we aren't going to be relegated.
To any other optimists out there, have a great weekend and here's to 3 points tomorrow.

We had a fantastic season last year, this year we are currently 7th with brilliant and uplifting wins already under our belt - all teams have bad results too.
IMO there is just a handful of 'fans' here in comparison to all STFC supporters everywhere that seem to question, criticise, judge, undermine, attack or just simply misunderstand Paolo Di Canio.
Thank goodness for what I believe is the silent majority - indeed vast majority - that prefer everything about the club today than in the recent past, especially and very much including Paolo Di Canio, his passion, his eccentricity and his management style.
Again, IMO (it seems so important to state this fact here too) the PDC haters are outnumbered and will remain so but one day you will have your way and he will be gone - and STFC may probably return once again to the backwaters of footballing obscrurity where we have spent so much of our time.
Our club will still remain and I will still be supporting them - but the silent majority may then not have as much hope as we do now.
The moaners will still be moaning about something however, that is absolutely certain and also without doubt!

Perhaps that's why we are now looking to get a couple more of their players as they are looking to make up for it?
I also think Paolo's signings have been good on paper, ever since he understood the league, ie signings from Wes onwards. All the signings this season have played at ths level or above, apart from Collins who has been OK.
As for Madine why on earth are we looking to sign him, in court 13 Nov for affray and intent to cause GBH? Nice!
More concerning for me is the hoof ball style of play. Why would we do that when we played such fantastic stuff at times on the ground earlier in the season. And what about the excellent tactical switch during the Coventry game, is that formation now no good either? Surely pumping up 100 long balls a game and winning at best 3 indicates that tactic ain't working!!

.
Footballers are NOT paid up front but get a monthly salary like most people
.
Our spend so far is a budget based on a full years equivalent
.
So if we sign a loanee for £2k a week it enters the budget as £104k a year but if he is here for only a month it is actually only £8k spent
.
So after he leaves we get "another" £96k to spend
.
Likewise if Stevenage are paying say 50% of Risser's wages then up to Jan we will budget 50% in our total then post that 100% so that alone could send us "over" - yet if he leaves we remove ALL his wages from the budget and come "under" again
.
As for the Anti PdC rants - I'm staying well out of it and will wait for the dust to settle and the "new" or "infrequent basher" posters to disappear again

We will have an amount (e.g. 4.5m) for the year which will be based on expected revenues for the season. The reason we got the embargo was that the tribunal fees would have pushed the expected amount we will spend over the 4.5m by the end of the season (based on what players wages we will have paid by the end of the year etc).
The figures you are spouting that we have already spent 4.5m is nonsense, we couldn't afford to pay the players wages for the rest of the season if that was the case!

...
I don't think PDC is a good choice for the Premier league but the bookies are right more often than wrong and the type of people I was talking to aren't those who go around making things up - I'm not going to bother justifying the background but upon arriving back from London a neutral also turned round and said I hear your man is heading down South after the next defeat!?...and that came from within Southampton.
----
Yes I know it could have been the cleaner's uncle;s sister's toad but it is highly unusual for these people to even talk about football at Swindon...all very strange.
...
I find it hard to believe a Premiership club would take a chance but Paolo has been posturing a bit of late, we had the change of chairman (which is not a it'll all stay the same move) and Southampton are desperate enough to give it a go - any manager going in would need a month pre-January to prepare.

My years appear to be passing even quicker now but at least this current tenure at STFC gives me passion, laughter and gets me acting like a kid again.
The day PDC leaves STFC (as it will for sure one day) will be a very sad day for me.
Yes we can all pick holes in the guy but never forget he has given us our STFC back. Put us back on a National map for good or bad.

Whatever, in 133 years of STFC history you quote three events when a fan could feel proud - TWO further events last year which I am certain LR will confirm is a 66% ratio was achieved last year alone and you did not bother to quote.

Instead of rising to the Adver bait every time they come up with a potential PdC bashing headline -why not just wait and see how the season actually pans out?
In the meantime why not cut him some slack eh!
Whatever, in 133 years of STFC history you quote three events when a fan could feel proud - TWO further events last year which I am certain LR will confirm is a 66% ratio was achieved last year alone and you did not bother to quote.
I just wish so called supporters would let Paolo manage and leave it there themselves, he isn't doing too badly in my book.

He is such a complex and contradictary person, I know I and others give him sh1t on here and rightly so, but that's only because some of his actions are so incendary and drive one to respond. There are good points and I feel I and others have highlighted these too. For me though, I believe acting in a certain way comes before sport and even though Paolo says he is so principled (and that's the paradox) he often falls short on this and treats people like the proverbial and this is not on in my book. Some people only see the results as important and that's fair enough, just not for me. Too much waffling from me now though, good night all.

---
All very weird in my book.
I wouldn't be surprised to see him take the Southampton job. Despite apparently being born with the 'Clough gene' I just can't see a 'top 4 club' risk taking him on. Saints have no superstars so he could continue the tough love approach to an extent. I can see some if not most of their defenders getting the 30 minute sub routine though and the dug out would be in for a battering....
How's that Swindon tattoo coming along by the way?

We all have our opinions and listening to the different ones is what makes this forum so addictive.
I imagine that we all want to see the Town successful and playing good football and no doubt those who attack each other on this forum sit next to each other at matches and shout and sing the same songs. So, why get personal?
I'm not the greatest Paolo fan but I love many of the things he has brought to this club, including the national attention and shear entertainment value. I could list loads of other qualities.
But ultimately I'm a lifelong fan of Swindon Town. It's not Paolo DiCanio's STFC, it's mine and your STFC. His time here (like many others before him) is a step on his way. We stay here.
Some think he should be kept at all costs, some (I imagine a small minority) didn't want him in the first place. I always felt we had to see how it went. It went well, very well for a while. Now I worry it has tipped too far the other way.
It is Paolo who is mainly rattling cages and if I had to choose between having the current Board here and Paul Bodin's youth set up as opposed to Paolo's 'my way or no way' I'd have to say 'no way'.
I'd be happy for Paolo to stay if he showed some respect to the Board, some respect to the players (in public) and some respect to the youth set up.
And no I don't want to go up the 420 and support the Pox.
