SWINDON TOWN: Target practice

Town boss Paolo Di Canio Town boss Paolo Di Canio

PAOLO Di Canio has already identified the players he wants to bring in on loan should the transfer embargo be lifted from Swindon Town’s shoulders.

The Robins have been banned from registering new players for the best part of a month after breaching the League One wage cap, leaving Di Canio to grow ever more frustrated on the touchlines.

The Italian has already earmarked the clash with Aston Villa in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday as the fastest route for the club to exit embargo, with victory potentially teeing up another high-profile tie in the quarter-finals, from which the subsequent unbudgeted revenue could push Town’s expenditure back below the 65 per cent-of-turnover limit.

If all those variables fall in Swindon’s favour then Di Canio would be free to dip into the emergency loan market once again, and he has revealed that when he has that freedom restored he knows exactly who to go after.

He said: “We already work on it. First of all because there is a sense of responsibility to stay there, understand and have the targets ready even if it is not close because we can’t proceed.

“We are more than ready if we are sure we are going to open the embargo. We have the targets, yes.

“If we beat Aston Villa and have a good answer from the board already I prepare because I don’t want to be not ready.

“Otherwise we cancel the embargo and I say ‘let me think, let me check if there is someone’. No.

“We have the target, we already have the targets. This is why we work at the top level, we are professional. Obviously once we know yes or no we are going to say ‘come on’ straight away or ‘goodbye’.”

In the meantime, Di Canio appears to have already resolved that Swindon do not have a shot at promotion from League One this term, despite sitting in seventh place with almost a third of the season gone.

He said: “Even with Jeremy (Wray, former Town chairman) it was a three-year plan but there was more desire in some way. Why not now? What not if we didn’t see anything special in the others and we could keep position, if we don’t get injuries, until December and then commit in January?

“Now we have the embargo and five or six injuries. It’s a disappointment but we have to accept and see next week what’s going on.

“The programme, the plan has changed. It didn’t change in general because we have to maintain the league and try next year to challenge for promotion. It will be more easy probably because we have many situations that we will sort out at the end of the season.”

End of October, sat in 7th spot... Still, always next year eh?

Strange attitude and bizarre comments but that's the PDC we know and love ;-)

PDC slowly starting to make more and more comments against the new board I would not be surprised that if we lose against villa he walks within a fortnight.

Which would be a huge shame.

Come on we want back to back promotions

Have to say that knowing them and getting them may be two different things - not always easy as we've found out all too often.
---.
As per the discussions the other day I'm hoping that Stevenage are a bit confused over what they're going to get thrown at them today.

Come on Town!!

When I read the headline, I was expecting to read Paolo had forsaken some of the running in favour of getting his strikers practicing hitting the onion bag and converting the multiple chances we make into goals.
Never mind, I'm sure sooner or later some team will get a roasting.

Good to know he's got loanees lined up, but doesn't the emergency loan period end very soon, anyone know when? think it'll be January at the soonest before we see changes, so best make the most with what we've got..

Getting tired of all this talk of the embargo, if PdC doesn't shut up he's on his way out. Concentrate of the team we have. No excuses. Losing patience with the man rapidly!

Even if the embargo is lifted, is Paolo assuming that the board will even make more money available for new players? If Mr Black can give his good friend Mr Wray the boot, he will find it uber easy to do the same to Paolo, especially if Paolo keeps on moaning. Plus, some fans will hear Paolo saying we will not go up this season and think 'ill go next season'.

It's a pretty big ask to see us given the way we are playing to beat Villa, especially if they come here with a very strong side. I hope we do, but given recent home game performances its a big call.

If we do beat them then great, but what is there to say the board will release funds for loan players. They may decide to stand firm until January and sort out all the financial issues around Wrays and Fittons loans at the same time with any funds generated from the Villa win.
That might also generate a bit of a hurricane in the managers office.

What he's actually saying here is if we lose to Villa then no chance of the embargo being lifted anytime soon, therefore no new players.
If we beat Villa the picture and plan changes so watch out for a more positive statement WHEN we beat the midlanders.

I really hope we do beat Villa, but has the board actually said they will definitely give him money for loans, or will they sit on it to try and use it over the Wray/Fitton loans. I think Patey is here to be shrewd and effective with cash, but not mean, so some will be available in January should Black see fit.

Seems as though equity can be used so the board can invest sums of money to get us out of the embargo, having said that from what I read the board will only invest come January if we have a realistic chance of promotion.

Yeah to be fair calling Villa poor compared to us does them a disservice. They knocked out Man City in the last round and they have good support, we've done well for ourselves but we're not world beaters. Reality check needed by some.

Loyal,

Think you have it right but if we beat Villa it could depend on the draw in the next round.

Beat Villa and draw Wigan or Bradford may not produce the funds required.

On the other hand, beat Villa and draw Man Utd, Chelsea, or Liverpool away it is a different story.

Talk of consolidation IMO is Paolo's way of reducing our expectations and possibly removing the pressure from the team. Perhaps we will see a more relaxed Town side after Tuesday !

Well looks like some of you were right, Paolo has lost the plot and put out a team with no chance of winning. Add to that Archie was taken ill minutes before kick off and Ferry had to be dragged out of the stand to go onto the bench.
We stand no chance , but wait a minute we've won FOUR NIL , missed a penalty and could have had TEN. Yeah he's lost it alright. See you Tuesday !
