THE well-attended funeral of Alice Beatrice Curtis, 81, was conducted by the Rev Derek Ormston at St Bartholomew’s Church, Royal Wootton Bassett, where Alice was a popular member of the local community.

Tribute was paid to her great sense of humour, positive attitude to life, and her love and care for her family, including her five children, seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Alice had various jobs over the years. She worked at the old Pye/Ekco factory in Malmesbury, the launderette in Wootton Bassett, and as a cleaner at the Lime Kiln Sports Centre.

She was a sociable person who enjoyed a joke and a game of bingo. She also liked reading and solving word puzzles.

She shared her family’s interest in football, and supported Manchester United. For some time she laundered football kit for young Wootton Bassett players. She appreciated family outings and holidays, whether in a caravan and tents at Weymouth, on a weekend coach trip to Blackpool or in later times on visits to the USA.

After a very wet holiday in Britain, and the discovery of reasonably priced holidays further afield, with better weather, she relished three trips to America, where she appreciated the attractions of Florida and Las Vegas.

Alice, who was her parents’ only child, grew up in a farming family. Her late husband Bert worked for Wises in Swindon as a bakery delivery driver. He died four and a half years ago, and Mrs Curtis later moved from The Rosary, where she had spent 57 years, to a smaller home at Beamans Park.

She is fondly remembered, and sorely missed.

Burial took place at Royal Wootton Bassett Cemetery, after which everyone was welcomed for refreshments and further reminiscences at Charrins Bar.
