VI Jones, 92, who contributed greatly to the work of Wootton Bassett & District Age Concern, for many years, was remembered fondly by family and friends at her funeral on November 24 at Kingsdown Crematorium in Swindon.

Robert Rowe, who officiated, spoke of Vi’s bubbly, outgoing, vivacious nature, her independent spirit, zest for life, determination and tireless efforts to improve others’ lives with friendship and fun.

Vi, who was proud to be a Londoner, was born in Paddington, and was the eldest of Arthur and Ethel Dade’s three daughters.

She spent her early life in Greenford. She remembered a wartime air raid in which the explosion of a bomb near her home sent a wardrobe toppling on to the bed under which she had hastily sought shelter. During the war she worked at a dairy and also helped to issue ration books.

She and Jack Jones, a bus driver and chauffeur, who were wed after the war, raised Jack’s two sons and Vi’s son and daughter David and Dilys.

Vi gained joy from her family, including six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, who valued her love and counsel.

In retirement, Jack and Vi moved to Woodley, near Reading before settling finally at Royal Wootton Bassett.

Vi became involved in several local organisations, and campaigned for the provision of bus shelters. She was instrumental in setting up the Monday Club, and was treasurer of Age Concern.

Vi made many friends. She was friendly, approachable, and took pride in her appearance.

In later years she appreciated the help of carers from Tydemans and Leonard Cheshire. She enjoyed attending Lorna Doone day centre before eventually moving into Athelstan House in Malmesbury.

Vi was a keen collector of owl memorabilia, including ornaments, crockery and fridge magnets until finally she sent out a plea “No more!”

Vi was a very special person, with a twinkle in her eye and a love for music and singing. The service at Kingsdown began with a recording of Edelweiss, from The Sound of Music, and ended with Tony Christie’s recording of Is This the Way to Amarillo?
