JOHN Finbar O’Brien (Barry) died at the Great Western Hospital on October 26 at the age of 80. A much beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, Barry is survived by his wife Mary and his children Don, Sean, Maggie and Dennis.

Barry was born in Dunmanway, County Cork on September 25, 1935, where he spent a happy childhood with his siblings Betty, Jerry, Donal, Kathleen and Margaret before moving to England in 1953 at the age of 18.

Barry settled in Hanwell in London. In 1958 he met his future wife Mary and they were married on May 9, 1959. In 1965 Barry, Mary and their then young family moved to Wiltshire where they were to spend the rest of their lives together, settling in Calne.

Barry worked hard throughout his life and had a number of jobs working in the building industry and later, the Avon Rubber Works, but is also known to many for his gardening skills and door work at many local venues.

In his spare time Barry had a passion for gardening and maintaining his three allotments, often giving away his produce to friends and family.

In the 1970s he enjoyed training his greyhound with some success and was always a dog lover, treating his pedigree greyhound and the family pet Topper with equal love and affection.

Barry will be sadly missed by all who knew him well. Whether friend, relative or stranger, he touched many lives with his smile, sense of fun, willingness to help others and hardworking attitude.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 11 2015 at St Edmund's Church, Calne at 1pm.
