THERE have been many tributes to Anne Labbett (nee Brickell), 52, whose funeral service filled St Bartholomew’s Church, Royal Wootton Bassett, the town where she grew up. Anne’s courage, dignity, inimitable style and positive attitude were truly inspirational, said the Rev Vicki Burrows, Anne Margaret Brickell was born in Weymouth on June 12, 1963 and moved with the family to settle in Wootton Bassett in 1966.

Anne attended school in Wootton Bassett where she developed a love of sport. She represented the school in many sports, and the Otters, Wootton Bassett’s swimming club, in competitions. She was also an early and ongoing member of the town ladies’ netball team.

In recent years she raised funds for charity through swimming in a triathlon, sponsored aerobics, a tandem sky dive and regular participation in an event very close to her heart - the Race for Life - which she completed again this year whilst still going through chemotherapy. Anne was a very social person who enjoyed parties with friends and used even these events to raise money for charity.

After leaving Wootton Bassett School in 1981 Anne enjoyed a successful career in finance, firstly with Forward Trust and in 1985 with Midland Bank (now HSBC). In the late 1980s she became Miss Midland Bank, a role that required her to attend a number of high-profile events throughout the country.

Customers and colleagues appreciated her professionalism, integrity and skills in customer care.

Anne’s sister Liz Williams said: “Anne was the ultimate professional, loyal to all, caring, supportive, elegant, immaculately turned out and working hard at her banking exams. She always looked fabulous, she was a beautiful lady, both inside and out.”

Anne was originally diagnosed with her illness 13 years ago and despite numerous intensive treatments she maintained her positive spirit, never complained, and was always supportive and concerned for others.

She met Derek, her husband and soul mate, through work 30 years ago. Their marriage was blessed at St Bartholomew’s Church, 22 years ago in 1993.

Anne lived life to the full, gained much pleasure from designing their house and garden, and particularly enjoyed wildlife.

She and Derek enjoyed many wonderful holidays together, and travelled the world to many destinations, including the Maldives, Sri Lanka, Australia, USA, Cuba, St Lucia, Barbados, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, Spain and Greece.

She made new friends wherever she went. She had special affinity for Cornwall, where she organised a final, memorable holiday with family and friends, when she knew that her time was so limited.

Liz Williams said: “She touched the lives of so many people, and she was a very special person to everyone, including her family, friends and her many godchildren. She was a loving, caring, selfless, fun person who was more concerned for everyone else, and packed so much into her 52 years.”

The vicar led prayers which gave thanks for Anne, “who was so positive, vibrant, happy and kind.”

The committal took place privately at Kingsdown Crematorium, after which everyone was welcomed to share reminiscences and refreshments at Marsh Farm Hotel. Memorial donations will benefit Cancer Research UK and Macmillan Cancer Support.
