BARBARA Plaister (nee Leighfield), who died shortly before her 86th birthday, was well known in north Wiltshire where she and her husband Geoffrey were in business for many years, and she was involved in dog training and judging.

Mrs Plaister was born at Wootton Bassett in October 1929, and was educated locally and at Headlands Grammar School, Swindon.

Her first job was at the offices of the former Cricklade And Wootton Bassett Rural District Council.

Subsequently she became a receptionist at the local GP surgery, where she came into contact with many people.

She and Geoffrey Plaister, of Spratts Barn Farm, met at a Young Conservatives dance, and were married in 1958.

They lived in a flat above Harrisons' shop (now Boots), before setting up their grocery and newsagent's business across the street at Cambridge House, the ground floor of which was converted into a shop which they ran successfully for more than 15 years.

Their love of animals prompted a move to run the Imperial Arabian Stud at Purton, where Mrs Plaister enjoyed helping with the horses.

She also gained an enviable reputation for her work with dogs, and she led training courses at various local venues, including Broad Town Village Hall. Mrs Plaister was a highly respected judge at shows across the region.

The Rev Dr John Railton, who officiated at Kingsdown Crematorium, told the large congregation that Barbara had led a full, demanding life, and was never put off by the prospect of hard work.

She and her husband were very active and although they visited the USA soon after their marriage, they enjoyed working, and rarely took holidays.

Sadly, declining health led to Mrs Plaister spending the last months of her life in care at Bassett House.

Dr Railton said: "However well, and for however long you knew her, she enriched your lives. Many people benefited from her experience and knowledge." He told mourners: "Give thanks for having known this very special person."

The service was followed by refreshments and more reminiscences at The Kingsdown Inn.
