Former Devizes policeman Glynn Jones died at the age of 83 on April 7 from a lung condition.

He is survived by his wife Ruby, his three children, Chris, Martin and Trisha, seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Mr Jones was born on July 4, 1931, in Coulsdon, Surrey as the oldest of three brothers.

He spent the Second World War living with his grandparents in Wales and attended Builth Wells Grammar School.

It was here he met his future wife Ruby Daft when they were both at school. The couple married in August 1955 in the Welsh village Llangammarch Wells and were married for 59 years.

Mr Jones joined the RAF on a short-term five-year commission before joining the police in 1957. His career with the police spanned 30 years with Mr Jones working with forces in Hereford, Leominster, Swindon and finally Devizes in 1970.

After moving to Devizes Mr Jones became involved in the Twinning Association. He visited Waiblingen and Mayenne, and hosted many visitors in return. From 1972 to 1983 he was also secretary of the association.

He retired from the police in 1987 and shortly afterwards moved with his wife to Walnut Close in Urchfont.

Mr Jones had many interests: he became an expert on inn signs, enjoyed watching sports, particularly the Tour de France, played bowls and was an active member of Devizes Probus Club.

When he retired Mr Jones still led an active life by joined the Urchfont Players and working with the Footpath Group.

He was also chairman of the village hall committee in the early 1990s, helped with the scarecrow festival and ran a short mat bowls club.

Mr Jones was also a member of the International Police Association. He held many posts with the association: he was hobbies secretary for 24 years, and served in the Wiltshire branch as secretary, social secretary and finally chairman from 1967 to 1987.
