Grandfather Francis Harrington, who moved to Devizes in 1970, has died aged 76.

Mr Harrington was for many years a member of Devizes Bowls Club and when ill health stopped him playing, he took up fishing with Trowbridge and District Senior Angling Club.

He was born in Addlestone, Surrey and went to school in Weybridge. His first job aged 14 was as a butchers’ boy.

He did National Service and was given the job as gardener for a brigadier which stood him in good stead in later life.

He later worked as a driver for an undertaker in Surrey. He married his wife Jacqueline in June 1964 and they celebrated their golden wedding not long before he died.

For a while the couple moved to Exeter before moving back to Weybridge where he joined the Royal Mail.

In 1970 their daughter Lisa was born and the couple moved to Bricksteed Road, Devizes with the hope of running a corner shop but instead Mr Harrington got a position as a gardener and handyman at Southfields old people’s home.

He loved his job but had to retire due to ill health in 1991.

He is survived by his wife, daughter and three grandchildren Kai, Maisie and Beck.

His funeral service was held at West Wiltshire Crematorium on September 29. Donations were made to the British Hedgehog Preservation Society.
