Margaret (Meg) Clarebout, a former midwife and district nurse in Devizes, has died aged 91.

Mrs Clarebout, nee McPherson was born at Loch Gilphead, Scotland, in 1923 and was later put up for adoption. After leaving school she started nursing at the Royal Infirmary, Glasgow, and became a midwife.

In 1955 she moved to work in Wiltshire and spent the majority of her time working in Devizes as a midwife then a district nurse.

She lived in Rowde, firstly in Springfield Road followed by Rowde Court Road.

At the age of 62 she married for the first time to Douglas Clarebout, an ex-submariner. Sadly he died after two years of marriage.

She was very outgoing, loved dogs and owned a succession of dogs. She also enjoyed travelling, was a terrific gardener and was a prolific knitter.

She featured on a television advert for knitting hats for Innocent fruit drink bottles.

Mrs Clarebout was still living at home until she became ill last July. She moved into Anzac House, Devizes, and after having a stroke and being treated in hospital moved to Avonmead Care Home, Devizes, where she died on May 20.

Her funeral service is at the Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, Devizes, on Monday at 11am. Donations in her memory will go to the church c/o Charles S. Winchcombe & Son funeral directors.
