Support the British Heart Foundation

11:00am Wednesday 24th December 2008

I am writing as the local British Heart Foundation in memoriam secretary to thank all those readers who have kindly selected the BHF to benefit from financial donations at funerals. Decisions can be hard to make at the difficult time of losing a loved one. However, the choice of the BHF shows an understanding of the vital work that the foundation has achieved significantly prolonging and improving the quality of life of the many sufferers from heart disease in this country.

I am writing in response to the letters in the past couple of weeks from Peter Morgan and T Lieper.

In last week’s Devizes Gazette and Herald, on page 3, the paper once again tells us that Devizes Town Council still cannot decide what to do about the zebra crossing and the potential accident waiting to happen outside Wetherspoon.

Jockey’s heyday

10:50am Wednesday 24th December 2008

The death of the Melksham flat race jockey and racehorse trainer, Tommy Gosling, at 82, recalls the heady days when he was living in Devizes over 50 years ago.

Woolies mystery

10:50am Wednesday 24th December 2008

Someone didn’t do their homework. My father took me and his ice cream ‘bike’ to Devizes on market day in the early 1930s to sell his homemade ice cream. I was doing a good trade and the manager at Woolworths told me to go away as I was taking his trade.

Bring back Beale’s

10:50am Wednesday 24th December 2008

Now that the Woolworth store will be closing, let us hope that we get a store to suit the people of Devizes. Like a store such as Beales (Drapery) which used to be in Long Street which stocked nice dresses, underwear and woollen garments. This store is sadly missed.

Flooding is avoidable

10:50am Wednesday 24th December 2008

There can be few experiences as distressing as having your home flooded.

Help our group

10:50am Wednesday 24th December 2008

Thank you for printing the fantastic letter from the Devizes Community Area Young People Issue Group. I think it’s great that they care enough about Devizes to get involved and to challenge Devizes residents’ attitudes about young people.

We will fight for council to cut costs

10:40am Wednesday 24th December 2008

We write in response to the letter from T. Lieper (Gazette, December 18).
