SIX new electric wheechairs will be given to people suffering from motor neurone disease - thanks to a donation by the Gazette's parent company.

North Wiltshire Motor Neurone Disease Association was awarded £4,500 from the Gannett Corporation's charitable wing in its latest round of grants.

The money means that the association, which supports sufferers who live in North Wiltshire and Swindon, will be able to buy the wheelchairs.

Group chairman Bob Perry said: "We are so incredibly grateful to Gannett for the support they have given us.

"This money will go some way to changing a person's life for the best - it will help someone living with this awful disease.

"It is a rare and fatal disease that leaves people unable to walk, talk or feed themselves.

"The money will be used totally on local people who are affected by this disease.

"Although we are supported hugely by the NHS and the local social services team, we could always use more funds to help more people living in the area.

"The electric wheelchairs are essential because they are easy and safe to operate and control.

"It is like winning the lottery and we are all so pleased and proud to be working for the charity."

North Wiltshire MND Association is the biggest beneficiary of the latest round of grants, which amount to thousands of pounds to charity each year.

Motor neurone disease is a progressive degenerative disease that leads to weakness and wasting of the muscles and difficulty moving and speaking.

The support group has funded many projects, including providing laptop computers so sufferers can communicate with others.

Throughout the year the group organises fundraising events in and around North Wiltshire including car boot sales and music recitals.
