Six possible sites have been identified for allocation as gypsy or traveller sites in North Wiltshire.
Stoneover Lane - Wootton Bassett.
The sites were chosen after the Government issued planning guidance which states the need to make
proper provision for gypsies and travellers and allocated £250,000 to North Wiltshire District Council to assist with the provision.

A recent survey commissioned by the council identified a need for 24 permanent gypsy and traveller pitches in the district.
The possible sites have all had to be assessed against strict criteria which includes; respect for the existing
environment, environmental impact, possible flood risk, good vehicular access, on-site parking and the use of brownfield sites or land that is currently untidy or derelict.
The Lead Member for Waste and Sustainability at North Wiltshire District Council, Cllr Toby Sturgis, says, "This report has been produced simply to identify a site in public ownership that would be suitable for the
provision of a permanent gypsy and traveller site. We now need to establish the viability of the sites. The government has made it clear we have to make provision for gypsy and traveller sites and if we fail to
make that provision within a reasonable timescale it will severely undermine the council's ability to control unauthorised developments of this nature within the open countryside".
The Gypsy and Traveller Site Provision report is to be considered by the Executive this Thursday evening.

I have a copy of the report which the council will be discussing at the Thursday evening meeting. According to the report the purpose of the meeting is to authorise the planning officer's recommendation that the Oxford Road, Calne site "be developed as a permanent gypsy traveller site." It is not the general broad discussion which is implied by Cllr Sturgis.
Let's be quite clear about this.

If what hausfrau says is correct then this is very bad news indeed. We are already faced with losses in the value of our homes as a result of the incompetency of the government of "The Dot", and now we may also face even more losses if this gypsy site is to go ahead.
We do not need or want gypsy camps in Calne!

I couldn't believe the ignorance when I read this story. How do you think this story would have gone down if you substitute the word 'gyspy' for 'blacks' or 'indians' or 'Somalians'. I think 'horror' and 'infrigment of humans rights' are very strong terms and these people need to get a grip on the real world. I thought we were a country of understanding and tolerance?

I agree with donteventhinkit this is not a race issue, how can if be race. these people are british or irish, NOT a different race - stop labelling everything race. I am sure if your neigbour left a matress, oven and gas cylinders on you drive you would not be happy. its not about labelling its about the fact that these people care not about you or there surroundings.......n
ot thanks!

I wonder if anyone would like to suggest what travellers should do and where they should go? For years landowners and councils (most often following complaints from local residents) have moved on travellers who move onto land not allocated for them. This is a solution. What shall we do with travellers? Keep pushing them on and on? Outlaw their lifestyle? Build some gas chambers? What?
Come on? Spill the beans... all this negativity yet not one offered solution.
I'd welcome a fresh ethnic and cultural aspect in Calne. It'd make a change from some of the narrow minded and, frankly, childish attitudes I have experienced here in the 30ish years I have lived here.

This has been discussed at length on the [bold]Calnetalk[/bold] forum from lots of different angles. The owners and members of that forum have not just been talking about how to stop these people settling in Calne, they have decided to get a petition for the residents of Calne to gauge their thoughts in this matter. Having spoken to some of the people in the business area of Calne (Porte Marsh) none wanted this proposed site anywhere near their premises because of fear of being constantly broken into. If you want to join in and help this petition then go to www.calnetalk.com for further details. Speak up before it is too late!!
