CHELSEA star Didier Drogba is the celebrity who will carry the Olympic Torch through the town.

The 34-year-old, who scored the equaliser and the winning penalty against Bayern Munich in Saturday's Champions League final, will be picked up at Lime Kiln, in Royal Wootton Bassett and transferred to Swindon.

The torch is set to reach Wharf Green, in the town centre, at 1.35pm on Wednesday where it is expected to be greeted by thousands of people.

Drogba is NOT BRITISH and there are more deserving local people who were nominated

oh great another reason to bring the town centre to a standstill and get no real business out of it as the olympics is only really a london thing could they not have kept it in london

From what I can gather from more reliable sources he is running in Swindon NOT Bassett. I think the article needs rewording, either that or he's going wait on the bus at coped hall, grab the torch then drive to Swindon?

Is Swindon that short of community members who have served Swindon and their sports team that we have to parachute in am aged prima donna who has no connection to Swindon.

I bet he doesn't even know where the town is on a map.

A total insult to local contributors to life in the town. I am now totally turned off the Olympics. Thanks LOCOG

Seems to me that Drogba may have had another reason to visit Swindon. Remember, he is out of contract and looking for a club for next season....

In my view, it doesn't matter that he's not English, we're have a very diverse culture in Swindon which it's nice to see represented so well. Drogba carried the torch 300 meters and drew the most amazing crowds. The atmosphere was great and I for one was pleased to see a very high profile player on the recent world sporting stage come to Swindon. The town did itself proud today, local business benefitted hugely, not seen so many people in the centre ever. Great day to be in Swindon.
