A CELEBRITY has come on board to support a scheme that grew out of a small bakery competition in Wootton Bassett.

The Basset Bun bake-off project has gained interest from a major food company and celebrity designer Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen.

The contest was set up by town councillor Sue Hughes to design a cake or biscuit, with the winner to be named the Bassett Bun/Biscuit and become synonymous with the town.

Judging takes place later this month, to tie in with the Royal title celebrations.

After hearing about the project through a member of the judging panel, Mr Llewelyn-Bowen has offered to help and it is thought he will be designing the packaging labels for the treats.

Coun Hughes said: “I got an email from Lady Sarah Apsley (vice president of the Royal British Legion) saying that one of her friends was offering some help.

“My jaw was on the floor for about 24 hours when I knew it was Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen.”

Red Lion Foods has said it would like to help promote the project and get it on the supermarket shelves.

The Angel Hotel in High Street will host the night of judging on September 24.

The deadline to submit entries has now closed.
