TACKLING on the pitch at Royal Wootton Bassett Rugby Club was accompanied by swing music and the sound of fairground rides as it marked the start of the season with a fun day and beer festival.
The event saw some of the tiniest players showing off their skills before the under 16s played a game against a touring side from Wales and the first team kicked off against Old Centrillians.
It was the nineth event organised by the club and what started as a beer festival is now a fully-fledged two day party with live music, a funfair and a hog roast at the ground on Malmesbury Road.
A disco was held on Friday night, with live music, while on Saturday Royal Wootton Bassett Academy’s swing band took the stage.
Visitors were able to sample 18 beers brought in from across the country, along with 12 different ciders.
Vice chairman of the 860-member strong club Andrew Gassor said: “It keeps growing and growing.
“It started originally simply as a fundraiser for the mini section but it grew. Now it’s a major thing for the club.”
He explained it was usually held right at the beginning of the season, but the first team had moved up to the South West 1 East division, which started two weeks earlier and was thought to be too soon.
