SWIMMER Jazz Carlin, who won two silver medals at the Rio Olympics, was delighted to revisit her old school on Tuesday to meet staff and pupils.

Present pupils at Royal Wootton Bassett Academy were thrilled to meet Jazz, 25, who was a pupil there until 2001, to have a close-up look at her medals, and to hear about her experiences in training and travelling the world.

She recalled her schooldays in Wootton Bassett, when she was up before 5am to start her rigorous training schedule.

"Sometimes I thought, 'Do I really want to get up and go into a cold pool?'" she admitted. “But I had a dream to be the best that I could be, and to get to the Olympics. I have great memories of school, and the amazing staff who are around to help you to achieve. I even remember my locker.

She told her young audience, “Enjoy every moment you have here. Make the most of your opportunities to help your dreams come true.”

She went on to present certificates to Year 7 pupils who took part in summer projects, spoke to a packed audience of Year 10 pupils, and answered question in a lively seminar with the school’s swimmers and athletes in the sixth form lecture theatre, where she also met sixth form students.

Head teacher George Croxford said, “It’s been wonderful. Jazz’s visit has inspired us all.”
