IT’S all change at The Prince of Wales pub in Royal Wootton Bassett as not only has it undergone a makeover but it also has new landlords behind the bar.

Paul and Michelle O’Mahony, who are from Frome, knew it was the one for them when they came to view it and wasted no time in snapping it up.

“It is exactly what we wanted in a pub,” said Paul, 42, who ran his own vending business for seven years before jumping ship for a new career.

“We had been looking six months for a pub and we were looking at ones near Bath and Frome. We came up and looked at this one and as soon as we walked in we fell in love with it.

“When we spoke to the brewery about it they said they were going to do a redecoration over time and we said to them we’d take it on and that’s what happened.”

The couple, who have five children and two grandsons, officially re-opened for business at the weekend with the town’s mayor Mary Champion making an appearance for the occasion.

Families flocked to bask in the sunshine and enjoy music, hog roast and a BBQ. On Friday night the pub in Old Malmesbury Road was also packed with music from Sound of the Sirens.

Paul added: “We opened 11 weeks ago but because we had all the works going on outside we wanted to wait until we had all that done to do the official re-opening.”

The perks of running their own business has also been exciting for the couple, who are originally from Reading and lived in Dorset for 16 years, before moving to Frome.

Michelle, 39, said: “It doesn’t feel like a job it’s a new lifestyle. Everybody is really friendly and they keep coming back.”

Paul added: “There are an absolute brilliant bunch of locals in here, they are like an extended family. We absolutely love the area and are moving to the flat upstairs.

“We are looking forward to the future and lots more events. We are aiming to have a beer festival at the end of the month.”

They also have plans to redecorate some of the interior over the next year.

But Michelle added: “We still want to keep the same character. The feel we want in here is a traditional pub.”
