A ROYAL Air Force airman from Royal Wootton Bassett will take part in a round-the-world sailing expedition.

Flight Sergeant Jamie Will, 43, has been picked to take part in the Exercise Transglobe expedition, which gives airmen, soldiers and sailors an opportunity to sail the world on a yacht. Mr Will will be crewing Adventure of Hornet, one of the two yachts involved in the journey.

The journey, which is intended to develop leadership, initiative and resilience in military personnel, started from Gosport, Hampshire, in July and will sail 35,000 nautical miles stopping a Montevideo in Uruguay, Grenada, New York and other destinations.

Mr Will said: “I am up for the adventure and to meet new people. I also look forward to increasing my sailing skills. Transglobe provides an excellent opportunity for adventurous training.”

Mr Will joined the RAF in September 1990. He is currently based at RAF Brize Norton, Oxfordshire, where he works as part of a contact monitoring team.

Nick Trundle, who is in charge of the voyage, said: “Exercise Transglobe will, in the true spirit of service adventure training, seriously challenge all who take part. It has been two years in the planning and we are all delighted that it is going well.”

A total of 392 women and men, from both the reserve and regular services, will be taking part during the 13 legs of the journey until it concludes back in Gosport in August.

“The two yachts are in excellent shape and I believe all those who take part will have experiences and challenges that develop their ability to do their military jobs,” added Mr Trundle.
