A JCB was apparently used during a break-in at a service station in Royal Wootton Bassett.
Police say a pickaxe and sledgehammer were used to break a hole at the Esso garage, Coped Hall, on Monday, between midnight and just before 5am.
It is also possible that the offender tried to use a JCB with a forklift, which was parked nearby, to dislodge a safe.
There was extensive damage caused to the building during the incident and hundreds of pounds cash was stolen.
Wiltshire Police would like anyone who has any information about the incident to contact PC James Mann 2488 on 101 or alternatively contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
