TODDLERS got to run riot at a fully refurbished play park in Royal Wootton Bassett after it was re-opened in a special ceremony.

The popular Woodshaw Green Play Area was closed in January to allow Royal Wootton Bassett Town Council's grounds team to clear the site before nominated contractors installed a range of new play equipment.

The refurbishment included a complete set of new equipment and new fencing enclosing the Play Area to help keep it safe for toddlers.

It was opened by town councillor Linda Frost, who campaigned with residents to have the area revamped, on Friday.

She said: "“I think it’s important we have good play areas with suitable, high-quality equipment so that our children can play in safe and secure play areas.

“This area is going to be specifically for toddlers, not for older children. The equipment will be specifically tailored for them and appropriate for them.

"I am absolutely delighted with the new design and hope that the children will have lots of fun.”

Refurbishment of the site has been long overdue, with equipment more than 20 years old.

Head groundsman John Macindoe said: "The team removed a 15ft high Leylandii hedge, along with several large shrubs and a lot of ground cover and weeds. After clearing roots, we then rotavated and levelled the ground, built three raised beds, spread and levelled out about 7 tons of top soil, laid 110 sq metres of turf, put down block paving and installed a new bench.”

Raised beds have been planted up with spring bulbs, heathers, groundcovering flowers, shrubs and climbers, and many of the materials used were recycled and saved from landfill.
