Representatives of Ridgeway House, the Orders of St John care home at Royal Wootton Bassett, shared a minibus trip to London with residents of the organisation’s home at Stratford Court in Salisbury.

The highlight of the trip was an opportunity to view the impressive display of ceramic poppies at the Tower of London.

Care worker Andrea Wright said: “We had a fabulous time. The security people were very good. They moved everyone out of the way for the wheelchairs and got us right up to the barrier for a good view.”

One of those who went, Ted, described the display as “very moving”.

After viewing the poppies, the party visited the Imperial War Museum.

Ruth and Ted, who were both evacuees in the Second World War, have vivid memories of wartime childhood. Ruth was evacuated to her aunt’s house in Northern Ireland.

As a seven-year-old Ted was evacuated from Harrow to a Welsh mining village. He stayed at the home of a family with two daughters. Ted remembers the father coming home from work, having a bath in the front room and the water turning black.
