Grant boosts club’s service

MEMBERS of a dementia day club in Devizes are celebrating after it won funding to open an extra day a week.

The Sidmouth Club, in Sidmouth Street, run by Alzheimer’s Support, was open on Tuesdays and Thursdays with space for eight members at a time. It proved so popular it had to operate a waiting list for places.

But after receiving a £75,000 grant from Rank Foundation, it is now able to open on Wednesdays as well.

Club manager Grant Newton said several of the new members lived alone, so coming to the club would be very beneficial for them.

He said: “Thanks to those in helping to make the extra day happen. To clear our waiting list was wonderful and several families under considerable strain have been helped.”

In recent weeks, one member re-learned how to crochet after watching a video on the club’s iPad and another rediscovered his love of chess by playing with staff and volunteers.
