Avebury offers an escape from Valentine's Day

Tourism bosses in Avebury are offering anyone sick of Valentine's Day an escape on Sunday.

An anti-lovers walk is on offer at Avebury on February 14. For those wanting to escape romance, join a bracing ramble through the stunning landscape around Avebury.

Visitor services manager Yasmin Sheikh said: “We thought it would be good to offer an alternative to Valentine’s Day as it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. Getting kitted out in walking boots and waterproofs will help put all thoughts of lovehearts out of your head! We might let you stop to enjoy snowdrops, crocuses and hot chocolate along the way, so long as noone gets soppy."

At The Courts Garden in Holt, couples looking for true romance can escape the commercial trappings of Valentine’s Day. Seeking out the love poetry hidden around the beautiful and intimate garden, is a great way to spend some quality time together.

Stourhead will have a Valentine’s Tree where people can make Valentine’s Cards and decorate the tree in preparation for the big day. For those who are willing to travel a little further afield and like a bit of sea air to whip up the storms of passion, head down to Studland Beach in Dorset and treat yourselves to a picnic hamper and a bottle of champagne.

Emma Wright, Visitor Services Manager for Studland Beach and Nature Reserve says: “The hamper is full of the food of love – king prawns, heart shaped cookies, passion fruit cheese cake and much more.

“To help you feel romantic we’ve even included a picnic rug and a love poem. We really hope champers and hampers will enable couples to enjoy the simple pleasure of being out in the fresh air on Valentine’s Day this year.”

Is there any date in the calendar that is free from the attention and blandishments of the tourism promoters? Eagerly I await May Day and the chance of a day trip to Vladivostok with parades of tanks and rockets thrown in.

The really stupid thing in the country is why some people are starting to have American style, July 4th Independence parties.

Well, we did get OUR independence from THEM on that day. But it would be churlish to celebrate.

I get more narked by the Guy Fawkes night being replaced by Halloween. Sure, it used to be celebrated in this country but not in the American form. Hot diggety!
